Sheryl spent time in the Galaxy Fleet as a homeless orphan in her childhood. Her parents seem to have been been bumped off because they opposed the executives of the Galaxy Fleet, who are Grace's partners.* Sheryl's grandmother appears to be Mao Nome, who was known for her Protoculture research.
