Commentary
The second Macross TV series, made more than 10 years after "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross". The main staff from the first series, Kawamori Shoji et al, participated in it, and with Amino Tetsuro, who was spirited at that time, serving as director, Macross 7 attracted attention from not only old-time fans, but also a younger generation of fans.
In addition, Kawamori Shoji imagined this work as having a "red" image, and the protagonist Nekki Basara's individual and beloved VF-19 Kai (nicknamed the Fire Valkyrie) exists as the symbol of the series. The Fire Valkyrie, which strongly hammers out heroic traits and has a face that's especially close to that of a person, gave fans a great visual shock.
If you think of Basara as someone who comes late at his own pace, then he is depicted in this first episode as a person with a wide range in his mood with such things as protecting Mylene from danger. The climax, with the impact of such a guy singing enthusiastically on the battlefield, had more than enough in it for viewers to grasp the series. In addition, although this first episode is a normal 30 minute one, it has double the number of animated cells for a TV anime (approximately 7,000 cells), the result of that appears in such things as the minute details of the live concert scenes and the smoothness of movement in the battle sequences.

Topics: The Scenes Cut into Eps. 1's Opening
Basara piloting a Valkyrie, which magazine articles etc had printed before "Macross 7" was on air, was concealed as an on-air surprise. For that reason, Episode 1's opening replaced the scenes of "a Valkyrie's face laying over Basara's face" and "Basara riding a Valkyrie" with other cuts so that Basara riding a Valkyrie would appear for the first time during the story.

Topics: Originally the main character's craft? VF-11
The VF-11 is active during the series as the Unified Forces' main fighter craft. As "Macross 7" and "Macross Plus", which were produced at the same time, are set approximately 30 years after "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", the VF-11 design originated in the hypothesis that "the VF-1's successor craft might appear at the time (their stories are set)". In addition, at the start of planning for "7", the VF-11 was planned to become the protagonist's fighter craft. However, the idea was washed away because of the reason that it would be difficult for the VF-11's transformation mechanism to be turned into a toy. The design for the YF-19, the protagonist's craft in "Macross Plus", was appropriated and the VF-19 was created.
