Commentary
The episode with such things as the intense fleet battle with the Varohta Forces, and the great efforts of the Full Armoured type VF-11 that accompany Kinryu's death, and even if it is in the middle of the story, it is one of the series' best that shows the series expanding in leaps and bounds. Even though it's an episode with many highlights, such as characters, mecha, and story, we would like to highlight Kinryu's death. Gamlin, who lost Kinryu after Physica, overlaps the appearance of Hikaru in the First Interstellar War, when he lost Fokker and Kakizaki.
Also, there's the line where Kinryu refers to pineapple salad as his favourite dish in the conversation with Sally and Miho, while heading toward the hospital room. "Pineapple Salad" was also the subtitle for the 18th episode of "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross"; immediately after his lover made the pineapple salad* in that episode, Roy Fokker stopped breathing due to injuries incurred in battle. In a similar way, even in this episode, Kinryu, who likes pineapple salad, dies in action. Nevertheless, although Ozuma Lee makes "pineapple cake" for Ranka Lee in the 17th episode of "Macross F", by safely returning from the battlefield, he admirably defeated the jinx.

* Translator's note: errata. Originally was: "while waiting for the pineapple salad that his lover was making".

Topics: The Full Armoured Thunderbolt
The Full Armoured type VF-11 that Kinryu piloted is an aircraft that was prepared under the assumption of land warfare on Planet Rax. Its model designation is APS-11. It isn't able to transform because of the heavy equipment, and advanced techniques are required to be able to fly it. Even though it is heavily armoured, contrary to its outward appearance, it has plenty of manoeuvrability as it's equipped with large booster units.

Topics: The Self-Sacrifice Of The VF Pilots
In this episode, the attack where Kinryu throws away his life in order to rescue the Macross 7 Fleet from its dilemma is a pilot self-sacrifice that is repeatedly depicted in the Macross series. In "Macross Plus", in order to shoot down the Sharon Apple operated Ghost X-9, Guld Goa Bowman decisively rammed it with the YF-21, which had been released from its limiter. Even though it resolved him of his life, his actions were a great help to Isamu Dyson, and it came to lead Isamu to Sharon's defeat. Also, in "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Do You Remember Love?", Roy Fokker battled Kamujin 03350 in the VF-1S, in order to let Ichijo Hikaru and Hayase Misa escape from the inside of the enemy ship. Even though Fokker and Kamujin died mutually stabbing each other, one can say that Fokker indirectly contributed to the end of the interstellar war by letting Hikaru and Misa escape without problem. The pilot's self-sacrificing actions are ones that focused on the big-picture of mankind's future, irrespective of the situation, and they had a big influence on the emotions of the characters in each series.
