Commentary
Feeling the popularity of the TV edition of "Macross", a new movie version was released approximately 1 year after "Macross" ended it's broadcast. In addition to Ishiguro Noboru, the director of the TV edition, Kawamori Shouji assumed the director's position and this movie became his first directorial production; he was 24 years old at the time. What led Kawamori to his appointment as the director was his assistance in directing and organizing the TV series as the "setting supervisor", in addition to the mecha designs of the TV edition, and admitting his intentions toward the field of directing.
The production of the movie was decided in March, 1983 (before and after the broadcast of the 27 episode "Macross" TV edition), and at approximately the same time, Kawamori completed the first story idea for the movie. Although this film's story is based on elements from the 4th to the 27th episodes of the "Macross" TV edition, it became a new story that gave priority to the circumstances of Minmei, Hikaru and Misa's love. Various scenes were changed, the position that Hikaru and Minmei find themselves in the beginning (at the start of the story, Hikaru is already a military pilot and Minmei has also acquired great popularity), and the background setting of the story, such as the Zentraadi and Protoculture, was also greatly changed.
On the visual side, they decided that the film would be made of completely new art instead of appropriating film from the TV edition; and the premise of being appreciated on the big screen led to more finely detailed theatrical edition characters and mecha. Mikimoto Haruhiko, Itano Ichirou and Hirano Toshiki were the chief drawing supervisors of those exquisite characters and mechanics. This film, which displays the free movements of that drawing camp, invited a great reaction, and even now it is still highly evaluated as having the foremost drawing quality in the history of anime.
After it's premiere in Osaka, Hiroshima and so on on July 7, 1984, this movie was sequentially opened in various places. On August 8, immediately following the opening, the video edition of the movie was also released, and before the end of the year, it had also recorded sales of approximately 60,000 units. The theme song, "Do You Remember Love?", which Iijima Mari had sung in the role of Minmei, was released on June 5, before the movie's release. After the release of the movie, the song reached #7 on the Oricon chart. At this time, Iijima Mari even performed on several popular prime-time music programs. Also, together with the film's release, the food service chain "Skylark" carried out a fair, where one could receive such things as a special bag and stickers. A commercial for Skylark appropriated film from the movie version and Hikaru's line in it, "I remember the taste!", became the talk of fans.

Topics: The Battle Scenes that have Grown More Dense
Each scene is drawn crowded with details, as the watchword of this film was "a density that corresponds to a theatre's big screen". Even in the opening battle scene, the audience is pulled into the story with the thorough depiction of Valkyries fighting while randomly firing missiles and the anti-aircraft fire of the Macross defence force. Also, the fans were delighted by the scenes that highlighted such mecha as the Armoured Valkyrie and Monster, which rarely appeared in the TV edition.

Topics: The Movie Director is in THAT Scene?
At the beginning of the film, an evacuation alarm is given, and Minmei takes refuge in the concert hall's waiting room. As a matter of fact, director Kawamori was the model of the man wearing a yellow sleeved sweatshirt in the middle of the screen in this waiting room scene. Although the movie's production staff were messing around when they drew it, it's a fairly conspicuous performance as even though he tries to get Minmei's autograph, he falls down due to the vibrations when the Macross transforms.

Topics: The Zentraadi Language That Caused Even the Voice Actors Trouble
In this movie, the lines on the alien side are conversed in "the Zentraadi language", and an elaborate effect was established by presenting their meaning with Japanese subtitles on the screen. In addition, this effect wasn't told to the cast side of the movie until just before they recorded their lines; and Kanie Eiji, in the Buritai role, left the comment, "I wanted to have more time in order to make the feeling that I was a little more familiar with what I was saying."

Topics: The Changes In The Design Of The SDF-1 Macross
The design of the SDF-1 Macross that appears in this movie has been somewhat changed from the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross". In addition to Large ARMD class Space Carriers connected to both sides of the ship, taking the place of the Prometheus and Daedalus, the overall proportions are thicker, and it has a more powerful impression. Also, the process of the transformation to Storming Attack Form is somewhat changed, and the sequence where the bridge and radar block combine has been done away with. Furthermore, in contrast to the TV edition Macross, which was originally a repaired Inspection Forces Gunship, the movie version establish that the Macross is a repaired Meltrandi Medium Gunship.

Topics: The Seriously Damaged Prometheus
[Other] Hikaru and others, who were dragged into the space fold of Buritai's ship and were transferred to an unknown planet, soon discovered the wreckage of the aircraft carrier Prometheus, and realized that they were on the Earth. In addition, in the opening movie of the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?" game, which was released in 1997, one could see the scene where the Prometheus was instantly sunk by the bombardment of the Zentraadi Fleet from the stratosphere, which wasn't depicted in the movie (this clip was also collected onto such releases as the "Do You Remember Love? HD Remaster Memorial Box" DVD and the "Do You Remember Love? 30th Anniversary Box" Blu-ray).

Topics: The Depiction Of Kakizaki's Death
The scene where Kakizaki's craft is shot down is depicted in extreme detail. Immediately before being shot down, the light of the missile that Miria's craft fired can be seen for an instant (in the red circle on the picture), and the appearance of the cockpit of Kakizaki's craft exploding is depicted on the communication monitor in Hikaru's craft (in the red frame on the picture). It is truly admirable, as in the cut of the fuselage exploding that immediately follows, there are such things as the missile pods falling off of the main wings because of the shock-wave.

Topics: Characters That Changed In The Movie Version
Even though Max was Hikaru's subordinate in the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", in this movie he became Hikaru's superior officer as Skull Squadron leader Fokker's successor. Although there are few depictions that indicate that Max has become the squadron leader, if one looks closely, it becomes clear from such things as Kakizaki calling him "commander Max", and Max piloting the VF-1S, which is the aircraft dedicated to squadron leaders. In addition to that, Kamujin became a mere regular soldier, Warera and the other two became the Zentraadi envoys, and there were many characters that despite being regulars, their roles were greatly changed from the TV version. Kamujin in particular was greatly changed, and even though he had the important role of simultaneously striking Fokker, because his lines were few and his features were hard to recognize, there seems to have been a considerably number of fans who didn't recognize Kamujin when they saw the movie for the first time.

Topics: The Meltrandi Who Replace The Inspection Forces
It was established in the "Macross" TV series that the giant clan separated into the Inspection Forces and the Zentraadi Forces, and continued to fight across tens of thousands of years. Also, there were men and women in the Zentraadi Forces (although they almost never contacted each other). That was changed in "Do You Remember Love?" to a setting where the giant clan separated into "men" and "women", and fought, and the army of the females was named "Meltrandi".

Topics: "Do You Remember Love?" In The Macross World
In the present Macross world, "Do You Remember Love?" is treated as "a moved released in 2031". That served as the definition in bringing the history of the series together as an explanation for the great differences in the basic setting of the "Macross" TV series and movie version. Also, even though the word "Meltrandi", which originates in "Do You Remember Love?", appears in the following productions, it is also presently explained as: "because the 2031 movie "Do You Remember Love?" was a big hit, 'Meltrandi', which is a neologism during the movie, spread as a word that indicates the female giant clan".

Topics: From Fleet Commander Rap Ramizu To Laplamizu
The character that changed the most from the TV series in "Do You Remember Love?", might be Rap Ramizu. Rap Ramizu, who was originally no more than the commander of a branch fleet of the Bodoruza Main Fleet, became the commander of a fleet with the same scale as the Bodoruza Fleet in the movie, and her appearance became that of a Living-Body Computer (the name was also changed from Rapu Ramizu to Moruku Laplamizu). Also, it had an effect on Miria, who was the ace pilot of the Rap Ramizu Fleet. Miria's status was elevated to captain (as well as pilot).

Topics: The Changes In The Pilot Suit
In "Do You Remember Love?", matching the theatrical edition's drawing density was the cause for the new, more detailed designs of such things as the pilot suits and cockpit interiors of the Valkyrie units of Hikaru and others. In addition, according to Haruhiko Mikimoto -who designed the pilot suits-, the helmets in the theatrical edition are said to have been devised to hide one eye or the mouth, according to the angle, to give a different impression.

Topics: The United Max And Miria
Although Max's movements were cut off as-is, when he stormed into Miria's ship in the middle of the movie, it seems that he thereafter communicated with Miria, and was ushered into the Meltrandi. In the final decisive battle, he was changed into a giant, boarded a Quadoran-Roh, and sortied with Miria. In addition, even though there was a plan at the initial production stage where Max and Miria had a marriage ceremony even in "Do You Remember Love?", it was cut due to the running time.

Topics: The Changes In Misa's Design
In "Do You Remember Love", the hairstyle of heroine Hayase Misa changed from the TV series' hairdo, with its curled hair ends (nicknamed snail hair) to normal, straight hair. According to Haruhiko Mikimoto, this was a measure to save on drawing time. In addition, in an anime Mook at the time, Haruhiko Mikimoto left the comment that although he intended to depict Misa with what seems to be a composed facial expression, it consequently became a gloomy facial expression.
