Commentary
The highlight of this episode is Ranka playing an active role in Miss Macross Frontier and the manner of Aruto's final test. At the time of it's broadcast, many fans were especially mesmerized by the feeling of lively-motion in the scene where Ranka sings "My Boyfriend's a Pilot", the debut song of Lynn Minmei, the heroine of "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", which used an even larger number of animation cells than normal. At that time, even though Aruto's combat scene is depicted as progressing concurrently to the appearance of Ranka singing in the contest, this aiming of the spotlight on the music, which was inherited from the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", is a directorial style that is only attained in "Macross".
This time, the S.M.S. Pixy Squadron appears for the first time, and their presence is shown. Above all else, the impact of the difference in Kuran-kuran when she's a giant Zentraadi or a My-clone was large. She had an existence that ought to be referred to as the third heroine of the series, as she acquired a great number of fans who were prisoners to the appeal of the character.
Miranda Merin, who appeared as an acquaintance of Matsuura Nanase in Miss Macross Frontier, is the grandchild of Jamis Merin, the actress who competed against and lost to Lynn Minmei in the contest in the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross". In this series, Miranda Merin seized the contest's crown.

Topics: The Changes in Telephone Communication
The means of communication, such as the telephone in the "Macross" series so far are such things as screen-phones and cordless home phones that were developments of consumer telephones which were mainstream at the time each series was produced. As mobile phones had generally spread in the latter half of the 90's, portable computer terminals* were used in "Macross F (Frontier)". Nevertheless, they weren't mere mobile phones, but enlivened the series as composite mobile computer terminals that included the elements of electronic pets and so on.

* Translator's note: one could consider the mobile phones in Macross F to be an extrapolation of the ultimate development of the Garakei before the adoption of the smart phone in the Japanese market, which started to happen during Macross F's original broadcast.

Topics: The Rerecorded "My Boyfriend's a Pilot"
"My Boyfriend's a Pilot" is known as the debut song of Lynn Minmei (Iijima Mari), the heroine of "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross". Nakajima Megumi, who sang it in this episode, sung it in a low tone, aware of Iijima Mari's singing voice. However, the singing arrangement was rerecorded as one for an album due to the suggestion of Kanno Youko, who was in charge of music, and questions wondering if something more Ranka-like would be better.
