Commentary
As Hibiki and Sylvie are detained for the roughly main part of this episode, they await their time to be active in the last episode. Nex and Captain Baruzey are greatly active in space in those parts. The appeal of this production as a robot anime is demonstrated to the maximum in the depiction of the Macross Cannons' intense firepower in the first half, and the Metal Siren once more wreaking havoc in delicately drawn pictures in the last half. Above all else, the popular animator Obari Masami was in charge of directing the picture drawing, and the combat depictions of the Metal Siren with abundant feelings of acceleration and hardness etch a strong impression in the people who see it. The depiction of the internal discord in the Marduk side further progresses in a form that receives the flow from the previous episode. The gentle-at-heart Song Shrine Maidens, whose faces are not seen on the terminal screen, resist the cruel "Song Of Death" operation, and are purged by Ingusu. In their vicinity, the innate goodness of man sprouts from within the enemy organization, and the expectations for the final episode pile up.

Topics: Obari's Characters With Peculiar Charm
Genius creator Obari Masami was in charge of picture drawing for this episode, as well as being in charge of the opening. According to a conversation with an anime magazine at the time, even though Obari aimed to keep drawn pictures that followed Mikimoto Haruhiko's character design in the opening, it's said that based on Haruhiko's understanding, the drawn pictures that appear in the original version of the fifth episode are in Obari's character design style, and the characters were corrected from the drawing supervisor's standpoint. Actually, the atmosphere of the main characters -such as Hibiki and Ishtar- have changed considerably, and that sort of visual point might be very interesting if such a visual point in this story is looked at again.

Besides Ishtar and Fefu, even though the Earthling types, like Erinshe, Wolf, and Ingusu are the standard Marduk, other types such as the head-only cyborg style types, like Ingusu's adjutant Mesena (upper picture), as well as the blue android or cyborg style type crew in Fefu's Scout ship (lower picture) also exist. Are they originally a different species in space, or were their bodies remodelled due to some kind of situation? The depictions give a feeling of the vastness of the world appearance.

Several mobile weapons with unique specifications appear in the Unified Forces side, as might be expected from this production having a considerably different setting than the other Macross series. There are such aircraft as the VF-XX (upper picture), which diverts the Zentraadi Powered Suits technology; and the GERWALK-roid (lower picture), which is equipped with diverse bombardment weapons in a fighter aircraft that clears away the transformation mechanism to Fighter and Battroid, and demonstrates its performance in close combat. Even though both have few turns on the screen, we would like you to notice them without fail.
