Commentary
It is a kind of summarizing episode that looks back on the story of this series from the 1st to the 13th episode. It isn't a complete digest, as it's in the style of Global reflecting on the voyage so far, as a report to the Earth Unified Forces Staff, and is mainly compiled out of clips from the 1st to 3rd, 5th to 7th, and 9th to 11th episodes. As it reflects Global's point of view to the last, it is an explanation of the state of affairs with the Macross rushing into an interstellar war with the Zentrādi, a race of giant aliens. References to the main characters of this series—such as Hikaru and Minmei—who Global didn't have contact with, are kept to a minimum. On the other hand, as Global didn't experience the Zentrādi interrogation that Misa and others suffered in the 11th episode "First Contact", which became a turning point of the "Macross" story, a considerably portion of the B-part of the episode compiles and uses clips from that in the format of "the reports of Misa and the others" being inserted into Global's report.

Topics—Was the 14th Episode Irregular?
As a matter of fact, this "Global's Report" episode was—without exception—not published in various anime magazines' broadcast schedules at the time (Jan., 1983). In addition to that, some of the anime magazines at the time published "Chinatown" (actually the 15th episode) as the episode that follows the 13th episode "Blue Wind". Apparently, the production of this episode seems to have been decided fairly abruptly. Perhaps it's very likely that a summarizing episode was inserted in order for the series to match TV broadcasting schedule adjustments.

Topics—Director Ishiguro and Captain Global
Captain Global—the lead in this episode—is said to have been modelled on the director of this series: Ishiguro Noboru. According to that Director Ishiguro's conversation at that time, he avoided depicting Global as an absolutely perfect Captain, and it's said that they tried to retain human weaknesses in Global's depiction. His trademark pipe was even thought about in the setting, such as Global's stomach actually deteriorating from the pressure of being appointed the Captain of the Macross, and he unconsciously reaches for the pipe that the doctor has told him to stop using.
