Commentary This episode is the continuation from Fokker's death, and is the one where Kakizaki is killed in action. Toshihiro Hirano, who was the animation director for this episode, left the comment that he put all his abilities into the drawings in order to enliven Kakizaki's death. The first half of the episode depicts the Macross crew members trying to live positively, such as Claudia and Hikaru trying to get over Fokker's death, and Kakizaki and Max trying to cheer up Hikaru by telling him the good news about the decision to accept the citizen refugees that are on the Macross. Whereas the second half of the episode has a striking development that takes a sudden turn that descends into even more despair due to the barrier system running out of control. In addition, even though Hikaru and Minmei are gradually becoming more distant, the depiction of Hikaru in the last scene where he tries not to tell Minmei about the death of Kakizaki shows that the two people already live in different worlds. Incidentally, concerning this scene, in the initial draft the production staff also considered a story development where Hikaru went to visit Minmei in the hospital and had a quarrel with her.

Topics—The Changing Aircraft that Hikaru Pilots
In this episode, Hikaru changes aircraft from the VF-1J to the VF-1S left by Fokker. In the movie "Do You Remember Love?", the VF Hikaru pilots also changes from the VF-1A to the VF-1S—however, it didn't have the story development of Hikaru inheriting Fokker's airplane. In addition to that, Hikaru boarded many other VFs, such as the VF-1D and VF-1J (general craft) in "Macross", and the VT-1 in "Do You Remember Love?"

Topics—Kakizaki Was The Sole Victim of the "Devil No.2 Plane" Kakizaki died in this episode. However, his death was also in an episode that was included in the framing plan for this series (at the time when it was assumed that there would be 39 episodes). Incidentally, in that content plan, the No.2 airplane in the flight that the hero belongs to (Kakizaki's plane number in the original version) is called the "Devil No.2 Plane" because the unit members assigned to it die one after another. When they were deciding which episodes to use or reject when the original version of "Macross" was shortened from 39 to 26 episodes, Kakizaki became the only victim of the "Devil No.2 Plane". After that, they decided to extend the broadcast to 36 episodes. However, the "Devil No.2 Plane" subplot wasn't restored to the story (incidentally, in the content plan for the 39 episode edition, there is a terrifying description in episode 36 that the 15th pilot of the No.2 plane has died).
