Commentary
The episode where some of the Zentraadi soldiers defect to the Macross. The subtitle "Drop Out" means "Desertion", and it represents the circumstances of the soldiers who withdrew from the front lines (in addition, the working title was initially "Fire Storm", which means "hot wind" and "the spirit of rebellion").
In this episode, the possibility of peace, which began to be seen little by little in the conflict between the Earthlings and the Zentraadi, becomes the foreshadowing for future developments. On the other hand, even though it depicts the shrinking distance between Hikaru and Misa, Misa decides to start on the trip to Earth in order to persuade the Unified Forces Headquarters to orient themselves toward the end of the war. The end is brought to a finish in a scene where Misa and Hikaru pass by each other, and hints at something between the two in the future. Also, we would like you to notice that this episode also once more throws at Misa the point of the phrase "when will this fighting end?" that Hikaru angrily threw at Misa in the 16th episode. This question, which Misa was at a loss of words for in the 16th episode, conversely in this episode, comes to cheer her up.

The story of this episode, "the enemy soldiers invade into the Macross", existed from the earliest organizational draft of "Macross". In the first draft, the enemy forces completely occupy the Daedalus, the Macross's right arm, and it was planned to expand into a struggle with the Macross, which is the main body of the ship. In addition, in this organizational draft, which was drawn up for a planned total of 39 episodes, a different development was written for the three-man spy group (the characters that became the basis for Warera and the others), who defected to the Earth side at the same time as the "right arm occupied territory operation", where they were "embraced by the Macross, and began a new life as Minmei's back-up vocals".
