Commentary
The episode that depicts the decisive battle with the Bodoruzah Fleet. On the one hand, there is the great battle that decides the fate of the Earth, on the other hand, the human drama of the main characters is developed, such as Hikaru and Minmei, who mutually put their feelings in order; and Misa, who crosses over the point between life and death, and establishes an emotional bond with Hikaru. In addition, the particulars of how the story from this episode was made, even though this series was planned to have a total of 26 episodes when it started being broadcast, was because the extension was decided in the middle of its broadcast. For that reason, the content of this episode corresponds to that of the final episode in the planning at the start of the series' broadcast. According to a conversation with producer Iwata Hiroshi, which was published in an anime magazine at the time, this episode doesn't lay out a special production foundation, and was made as a normal episode. In order to match the shots in the battle scenes with Minmei's songs, Kawamori Shouji (under the name of Kurokawa Eiji), who was in charge of the storyboards, made a tape that tied together similar scenes from existing episodes, and cut the storyboards by referring to that (he is considered to have used the VCR to death in this work).

Topics: The Mecha Drawn With All Of Anno Hideaki's Might
Anno Hideaki (23 at the time), who was later widely known for such series as "Neon Genesis Evangelion", participated in drawing pictures for this episode. At that time, Anno, who was an acknowledged authority in drawing mechanical pictures, was in charge of the cuts where the mecha were the focus in this episode. The drawn pictures, especially the ones that gave impact to the scene where the Destroid Monster activates at the beginning, even became the topic of anime magazines at the time.

Topics: The Detailed Mechanical Depiction That Enlivened The Decisive Battle
Kawamori Shouji, who was in charge of the VF-1's design, cut the storyboards in this episode. It's possible to say that this episode's detailed mechanical depiction of the VF-1, such as the protective cover covering the canopy when Hikaru's VF-1S rushes into the atmosphere, and the extended neck when the head laser machine-guns are used in GERWALK form, are ideas distinctive to the designer.

The nightmare battle that reduced the whole area of the Earth to scorched dirt ended. The few surviving people alighted on the ground, which didn't even have a shadow of what was seen before, and they started the revival effort. However, the burning coals of a new problem also expand there.
