Commentary
In the same way as the TV series production "Macross 7", which was telecast at the same time, "Macross Plus" emulated such things as the world appearance and in-universe time line of "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", and was produced as the official successor series of Macross. In addition, Kawamori Shouji assumed the position of General Director, as he was a member of Studio Nue, the original authors of Macross. He came to haul the Macross series from Macross Plus onwards, and became one of the creators who symbolizes the productions called Macross.
From the outset of this first episode, depictions of things that vividly remind one of "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", such as the appearance of Zentraadi Battlesuits and characters who originated in Skull Squadron, are seen here and there in various places. On the other hand, it's also possible to catch glimpses of the depiction of the feeling that 30 years in-universe time has elapsed since the first Macross production, in such things as the Unified Forces' main fighter having been renovated from the VF-1 to the completely state-of-the-art VF-11B Thunderbolt.

Topics: The world 30 years after the founding "Macross"
Macross Plus depicts the world 30 years after "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", the Macross series' first production. It has a setting that is markedly studded with references that extend to the preceding production, such as the existence of the "Roy Fokker Medal", named after the person who was crowned the hero of the First Interstellar War, and Commander Millard Johnson having previously been a member of Skull Squadron.

Although "Macross Plus" is known for it's Western tasting style, it's musical compositions were produced by Kanno Youko, a famous artist who represents the music scene in Japan right now. With her active role in Macross Plus, which became her anime music debut, she gained a foothold toward the genuine advancement of anime music. Even after Macross Plus, she continued to produce music for the Macross series, such as "Macross F".
