Story
In the end stage of the Unification War, a Protoculture relic reaction was detected in the coastal waters of Mayan Island, a solitary island in the Southern sea. The Earth Unified Forces and the Anti Unification Alliance collided over that relic, the "Bird Man". The Unified Forces pilot Kudo Shin, who had been shot down in the battle, washed up onto Mayan Island, and helped the island's shrine maiden Sara Nome, and her younger sister Mao. While the fighting of both camps reached even Mayan Island, Shin and Sara met while being simultaneously attracted and repulsed by each other, and Mao also harboured a love for Shin. And, as the struggle intensified, Shin and the girls were swallowed up in the struggle for the Bird Man, whether they liked it or not.

Caption: The Earth Unified Forces and the Anti Unification Alliance invested experimental level Variable Fighters into the fight, in order to seize the Bird Man. The peaceful Mayan Island was covered in the fires of war, and the Bird Man, who was awoken by the grief of the shrine maiden, decided that mankind had not yet stopped fighting, and started to destroy mankind.

Character

Earth Unified Forces
Kudo Shin

A curt Unified Forces fighter pilot who has a closed mind. He is spotted by Roy Fokker, and selected to be a VF-0 Variable Fighter pilot.

Roy Fokker
A Unified Forces ace who commands the VF-0 unit. As a character who embodies the fighter pilots who love alcohol and women, he is a fine fellow who considers his subordinates.

Citizen
Sara Nome

The Mayan Island shrine maiden who is referred to as "the hand that guides the wind", is a cold young lady. Mysterious forces are borne in her singing voice, and she hides her vehement temper inside herself.

Mao Nome
The younger sister of Sara, who dislikes the customs of the insular island, and holds a yearning for the city. For that reason, she is often in conflict with her elder sister. She has a naive, tomboy personality.

Anti Unification Alliance
D.D. Ivanov

A virtuoso pilot who commands the SV-51 Variable Fighter unit. As a talented man with a history of wandering from battlefield to battlefield, there was also a time that he was Fokker's instructor.

Nora Polanski
As a beautiful woman with a strong-minded character that has a deep bitterness for the Unified Forces, she is the lover of her colleague, Ivanov. She has great talents as an SV-51 pilot.

Mechanic

Unified Forces
VF-0S Phoenix

One of the prototype early mass-produced craft that established the foundation of the Variable Fighter. It is loaded with conventional turbofan jet engines as the main engines, which have been tuned up to the utmost limit.

Destroid Cheyenne
One of the prototype Destroids that had a form midway between the Tomahawk and the Defender. They were used as anti-aircraft gun platforms on the Carrier Asuka.

Anti Unification Alliance
SV-51γ

The Anti Unification Alliance Variable Fighter attained a degree of completion that exceeded that of the VF-0, because from the beginning it was developed under the assumption that it would be for combat. Although it is large, it has excellent manoeuvrability.

Octos
The Anti Unification Alliance's amphibious Destroid. It boasted of a great practicality, as it was able to act in a cruising form when underwater, and became a four-legged walking form on the ground.
