Commentary The word "Zero" means the starting point, which shows that this series is the oldest in the chronological order of the Macross series. This series amounts to one that's even earlier than the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", and is the series whose subject is the "Unification War", which depicts the war between Earth's mankind. For that reason, one of the big features is that many parts of the setting are closely linked to earlier and later Macross series, such as the "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", which was released even earlier than this series, and the later released "Macross F".
Also, once could say that Macross Zero's biggest feature is that the setting within the series is 2008, where the real world that we live in blends with the fictional Macross world. In this first chapter, modern weaponry that also exists in the real world appears one after another from the start, such as stealth bombers, cruisers and currently used tanks. In contrast, Valkyries also appear - the symbol of the fictional Macross world - such as the VF-0. The viewer can perceive at a glance the turning point from the real world to the fictional world, with the mixing of the so-called real and fictional.

Topics: The Armaments that Symbolize the Old Generation
The F-14A+ and the MiG-29 appear as the main fighter aircraft of the Unified Forces and the Anti Unification Alliance. These aircraft are depicted as the armaments that symbolize the old generation. They are in a turning point of an era in the story, such as when the F-14A+ that Shin pilots is at wit's end when it comes to shooting down the new SV-51 Variable Fighter. After this, the main fighters of both camps are reshuffled into the VF series, such as the VF-0, and the world view of the production simultaneously transitions from reality to a fictitious one.

Topics: The Character who Plays an Active Role Passing Through the Borders of the Series
Although Roy Fokker was seen playing an active role as one of the main characters in the first series "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", he is also depicted in this series in his younger days as an important person who still holds the key of the story. It's possible for the viewer to grasp the height of Fokker's popularity that runs in the Macross series, because his image was selected as the main character who crosses over the 2 series.
