Grace had also been a scientist studying the V-type Infection and the Vajra in the 117th Large-scale Research Fleet, and she safeguarded Sheryl in the slums of Macross Galaxy for her own purposes. She infected Sheryl with the V-type Infection and studied the effects of the infection on a living person together with plotting to use Sheryl in Operation Carnival. However, when Grace concluded that Sheryl was useless, she used Ranka.
