The VF-1S that Roy Fokker rode, airframe number 001 "Skull 1", lost it's master due to his death in action. Major Fokker's junior, First Lieutenant Ichijo Hikaru, inherited it. He operated this "Skull 1", and fought to the bitter end of the First Interstellar War in it.

Caption: First Lieutenant Ichijo, who drove "Skull 1" for the first time in North America, landed military gains in it such as simultaneously defeating four Dogfight Pods.

Originally a stunt pilot, Ichijo had interacted with Fokker from their civilian days. He enlisted during the Macross's voyage, and distinguished himself with his superior piloting skills.

Related Matter: The Death Of Kakizaki Hayao
Ichijo's subordinates were swallowed up in the Macross's omni-directional barrier runaway, and Second Lieutenant Kakizaki Hayao was killed in action. Kakizaki was one of the first subordinates that Ichijo had, and he was like the squadron's mood maker because of his cheerful personality.

A VF pilot who was inaugurated during the Macross's cruise. He was given a specially coloured VF-1A, and served as the Vermilion Squadron's No.2 aircraft.

Caption: Kakizaki was a war buddy who shared in the pleasures and pains of Hikaru and the others, such as becoming a Zentraadi prisoner together with Ichijo and Hayase Misa.

Caption: Kakizaki was late with his withdrawal timing, and his aircraft was swallowed up and destroyed in the barrier's explosion. Kakizaki himself was also killed.
