Related Matter: The Cockpits For Unique VFs
Accompanying technological improvements, VF cockpits came to be seen with styles that differed from conventional aircraft from about 2040, such as the models that used control by thought and uniquely shaped control columns. These cockpits weren't generalized and had problems in such things as pilot training, as they required piloting skills that differed from the normal means of controlling an aircraft.

Caption: The BDI System, who's control mechanism is by brainwaves, was verified in the YF-21. Even though it was possible to completely control the aircraft and firearms only by thinking about it, it was greatly simplified in the VF-22, the craft that adopted the regulated BDI System.

Caption: The aircraft that supported the Sound Energy System, such as the VF-19 Kai, adopted musical instrument styled control columns.

The Main Engines For VFs That Use OTM
As far as VFs are concerned - which are required to be operated in space and within the atmosphere - thermonuclear turbine engines are essential, indispensable equipment. The point that they continued to supply great electrical power, that was used to operate such things as the Energy Conversion Armour, was an advantage. However, their development was rough going, and finally, the experimental engines for VFs were finished at the end of 2006.*

* Translator's note: originally was: "and finally, the FF-X000 series engine was completed at the end of 2006".
