Finally, after spending close to a year evading the pursuing Zentraadi Forces, the Macross succeeds in returning to Earth. However, the Unified Forces Headquarters doesn't permit the disembarkation of the 50,000 civilians that reside within the Macross onto the Earth.

Extra Report: The Unified Forces Headquarters' Point Of View, Faced By Hostile Aliens
The Zentraadi Forces, who attacked the Earth during the Macross Space Launch Ceremony, disappeared after exchanging fire with the Unified Forces, chasing the Macross which had folded. The Zentraadi Forces left the Earth. They decided that the Earth is a micron planet that contact is prohibited with. Even though they devoted themselves to the pursuit of the Macross, the Unified Forces certainly didn't know the reason for that. On the other hand, the Zentraadi Forces prioritized the capture of the Macross. It is a time when the the Unified Forces underestimated the fighting capabilities of the Zentraadi as they took into consideration their attacks, in addition to looking on the Zentraadi as a puny force that cannot even skillfully sink one Macross. Nonetheless, there was no means to know the enemy's true state of affairs. Thus, the upper ranks of the Unified Forces stuck to their optimistic observations and came to take an extreme strategy that had to be called "big talk": executing diversionary tactics that used the Macross as a lure while they truly prepared their own fighting capabilities to annihilate the enemy forces. Behind the scenes, the Unified Forces assumed that, in general, the war with the aliens could be kept private, and in addition, they had misgivings corresponding to the deterioration of the world situation, which hadn't cooled down from the chaos of the Unification War. At this point, it's not an exaggeration to say that their their vision wasn't aimed at space, but turned toward the surface.
