The Protoculture Interference and an Earth That Was Burnt to the Ground
The history of humankind on Earth has been rewritten by such things as the "Humankind Protoculture Interference Hypothesis" advocated by Dr Hasford, and the traces of alien civilization confirmed after the fall of the ASS-1.* Humans on Earth were once thought to have evolved spontaneously, however they turned out to have been genetically modified by aliens. Today, those aliens are known as the "Protoculture".
During the era of the Protoculture's Interstellar Republic (Galactic Empire), the Protoculture—who considered Earth to be a candidate planet for emigration—incorporated Protoculture genes into Earth's primeval humans in anticipation of future emigration, and created a "pseudo Protoculture" that served as their workers. They are believed to be the direct ancestors of the present-day humans on Earth. This is the reason why there is little difference between the genetic structure of the Zentrādi (Miclones), a fighting race created by the Protoculture, and that of Earth's humans.
However, this also entailed the possibility that Earthlings would build an advanced civilization and turn against the Protoculture. Therefore, in order to restrain the excessive progress of humankind on the Earth, the Protoculture set up the "Bird Man", a device for monitoring as well as eradication. However, when the Bird Man ceased its activities after a certain incident, humans spent tens of thousands of years building its own civilized societies in various places on the Earth. Then, in 1999 after the ASS-1 spaceship crashed to Earth, Earth's humans obtained the Protoculture-derived Over Technology (OTM). And after the Unification War, the Earth was unified under the Earth Unified Government.
Thus, the Earth was placed under the Unified Government. However, the First Interstellar War—an interstellar war with the alien Zentrādi—broke out shortly thereafter. Earth was devastated by the Zentrādi onslaught. After the war, the Earth was reborn by the few remaining Earthlings and cooperative Zentrādi.

Related Matter: Alien Involvement And The Earth's History
After the Bird Man went dormant, incidents related to alien civilizations did not occur for a long time. However, the fall of the ASS-1 triggered the outbreaks of such things as the Unification War and the interstellar war. After the interstellar war ended, such things as the Earth Regeneration Project and the Humankind Seeding Project were advanced.

Earth After The ASS-1 Fell
When the Bird Man went dormant tens of thousands of years ago, Earth humans escaped the direct influence of the Protoculture, and only the vestiges of them could be found in myths and folklore around the world. However, with the fall of the ASS-1 in 1999, things changed abruptly, leading to a war between Earth humans over OTM and the reorganization of the Earth, and an interstellar war with the Zentrādi, a fighting race.

• Once the Bird Man—a device for surveillance as well as the annihilation of Earth humans—separated its head from its body and ceased functioning, the influence of the Protoculture disappeared for tens of thousands of years.
⊘ The Unification War
The ASS-1 confirmed the existence of aliens and interstellar warfare, and Earth's humankind began to seek the integration of the Earth in anticipation of anti-alien warfare. However, the nations of the Earth were divided into a provisional Unified Government and an Anti Unification Alliance over the leadership of the integrated Earth and the OTM obtained from the ASS-1. The Unification War, which was a global war, broke out.

• In 2001, the conflicts that had erupted all over the world continued to intensify, expanding into the Unification War. The war lasted until the end of 2008, when it finally ended with the victory of the provisional Unified Government.
⊘ The First Interstellar War
In February 2009, immediately after the end of the Unification War, the giant alien Zentrādi's Bodoru Main Fleet, which was in the midst of pursuing the hostile "Inspection Forces", appeared in lunar orbit. In response, the SDF-1 Macross—the refurbished ASS-1—opened fire on them, plunging the Earth and the Zentrādi Forces into a state of war. Due to the Zentrādi sticking to the Macross, the damage on the Earth was minimal. However, in the final stages of the war, the Earth was destroyed by the orbital bombardment of the Bodoru Main Fleet, which had put its full strength into it. With the cooperation of the pro-Earth Zentrādi, the Bodoru Main Fleet was repelled, but the Earth civilization suffered a heavy blow.

⊘ After The First Interstellar War
The Earth was thoroughly destroyed by orbital bombardment at the end of the First Interstellar War. Immediately after the war, however, a New Unified Government was established, and the few surviving Earth humans and the pro-Earth Zentrādi proceeded to rebuild the planet. In addition to the construction of cities centred on Macross City, the regeneration of the Earth's environment was also carried out.

◼ Eurasia—The Centre Of The Anti Unification Alliance
This is an area where many countries and regions are thought to have participated in the Anti Unification Alliance. This can be inferred from the fact that it was the only continent other than Antarctica where a Grand Cannon was not built. It is said that the regional conflict that triggered the Unification War occurred in the Middle East, which—along with the Pacific region—is thought to have been a hotpot in the Unification War. Sukhoi, Israeli Aircraft Industries, and Dornier which developed the SV-51, the Anti Unification Alliance VF, were companies based in this region.

• The development of the weapons used by the Anti Unification Alliance—such as the SV-51 and the OCTOS—also involved companies from pro-US and former NATO member countries, which gives a glimpse of the complexities of the Unification War.
◼ Africa—The Region That Played a Role in Human Existence
An area that appears to have been strongly influenced by the Unified Government, with such things as the construction of the Grand Cannon III in the Victoria Autonomous Region, from the time of the Unification War to the First Interstellar War. The Grand Cannon III was never completed, however the people who had fled to its underground sections and the DNA samples of plants and animals that were stored there would greatly contributed to the postwar reconstruction.
⊘ Earth From the Unification War to the First Interstellar War
The shockwave that hit the Earth when the ASS-1 fell and the Unification War that took place all over the Earth caused extensive damage in many areas. On the other hand, the situation changed as large anti-alien structures such as the Grand Cannons were constructed, and islands such as South Ataria and Mayan attracted attention.

• When the ASS-1 fell, cities in its path were destroyed by the shockwave. South Ataria Island, the ASS-1's landing site, became a place of political importance.
Related Matter: The Earth as Depicted in the Movies
The Earth itself was hardly attacked by the Zentrādi until the end of the First Interstellar War, however, in the "Do You Remember Love?" movie—released in Feb. 2031—the Earth was destroyed at the start of the story. The Macross also space folded to escape the orbital bombardment, and the story is based on divergent theories, such as a Protoculture City Spaceship having been left on the Earth.

• [Ai] Misa Hayase and Hikaru Ichijō—who had been captured by the Zentrādi—escaped to the destroyed Earth, where they saw the wreckage of the Prometheus aircraft carrier and so on.
• [Ai] The movie also depicts the episode where the Protoculture Altira city spaceship, which has become a ghost town, surfaces on the sea.
• [Ai] Alaska Base, the major cities and so on, as well as the environment were destroyed, and there were no survivors.
• [Ai] The Earth was portrayed as being highly contaminated with radiation, and strange fish and other things appeared in the movie.
◼ The North and South American Continents—The Core Region Of The Unified Government And Unified Forces
The areas that were the core regions for the Unified Government and Unified Forces; such as Alaska, where the Unified Forces headquarters and Grand Cannon I were located; and Brazil, where the Grand Cannon V was being built. Many of the companies involved in the development and production of the Unified Forces VFs and Destroids seem to have been concentrated in North America.
The Ontario autonomous region in North American is famous for having announced that it would accept the refugees from the SDF-1 Macross during the First Interstellar War. However, it also withdrew its acceptance of the refugees after the Macross's barrier went out of control and devastated the region.
North America became the central region for the Earth's reconstruction after the First Interstellar War, and the Grand Cannon V also became important as a massive shelter and gene bank.

• The Unified Forces Headquarters Alaska Base with the Grand Cannon I. It was a vast underground facility, but was destroyed in the Zentrādi attack.
• North America is also one of the few regions that suffered damage as a result of a battle between the Macross and the Zentrādi. The Ontario autonomous region fell victim to that.
◼ The Pacific Region—The Most Important Area During The Time Of The Unification War
The Pacific region quickly became the most important region on Earth because of such things as South Ataria Island, where the ASS-1 fell; and Mayan Island, where the Bird Man—who was a product of the Protoculture—was sleeping. South Ataria Island and Mayan Island were the settings of battles during the Unification War; and South Ataria, where the ASS-1 was converted into the SDF-1 Macross, was the place that triggered the outbreak of the First Interstellar War. In addition, South Ataria Island was wiped out after the outbreak of the First Interstellar War when it was caught up in the Macross's space fold, and Mayan Island was also severely damaged in the Bird Man Incident.
In Oceania, the under construction Grand Cannon II was blown up by the Anti Unification Alliance. It is said that this was an area where the balance of power was equal between the Provisional Unified Government and the Anti Unification Alliance.

• South Ataria Island became home to a population of more than 50,000, with people working to investigate and repair, or work on the fallen ASS-1.
• Mayan Island was where the Bird Man sank into the surrounding waters. A lineage of "Mayan Shrine Maidens"—who had the ability to communicate with the Bird Man—also remained on the island.
• Yokohama was an area where no damage from the Unification War could be seen. Incidentally, Japan is also known as the production area of the VF-1J (J-type) Valkyries.
⬢ Outer Space From The Unification War To The Time Of The First Interstellar War
Feeling the need to expand its space forces as a countermeasure against aliens, the Unified Forces proceeded with the construction of bases on the Moon and Mars, as well as space colonies, including those for industrial use. As a result, such facilities as space bases capable of building large spaceships and orbital industrial plants were in operation during the Unification War, and they played an important role even after the Interstellar War.

• The OTM space metal materials used in the VF-0 Phoenix was manufactured at a space orbiting plant.
• The space facilities were also the reason why the ARMD class and the Space Destroyers were built when the First Interstellar War broke out.
⊘ Moon
The Moon was also the site of the construction of the SDF-2 Megaroad 01. In addition, such facilities as Apollo Base and the Grand Cannon IV (never completed) were also built on the Moon. After the war, the Apollo Base also served as the base for patrols in the Solar System.
⊘ Space Colonies
They were built as orbital plants and residential use, and were in charge of OTM related equipment and weapon production. After the war, they were also used as residence facilities for the Zentrādi.
⊘ Mars
A planet where the Unified Forces were building the Sara Base. It was unmanned at the time of the First Interstellar War, as its personnel had been pulled out during the Unification War.
⊘ The Orbit Of Pluto
After the interstellar war, patrols of the Solar System began. It is said that a Lancer II Space Fighter with a pilot in a cryo-sleep was once discovered.
⬢ The Earth After The First Interstellar War
The orbital bombardment at the end of the First Interstellar War devastated the Earth, and the rebuilding of cities was hastened by the New Unified Government and the private sector. The construction speed was extremely fast, and a large number of cities had been built in the year following the end of the war. The prominence of towns built near the large ships that crashed on the Earth is thought to be due to the ease of obtaining energy and construction materials.

⊘ Macross City
The symbolic city of Earth, built around the fallen Macross. It was built under the Macross City Reconstruction Plan of May 2010, and was also the core of the New Unified Government and military forces.

An industrial city on the coast. In the city there was also a factory that produced power capacitors for reaction engines. A large fire broke out in the city due to sabotage by the Kamujin Faction.

A town built in a crater where a Zentrādi ship had crashed. The huge Zentrādi ship, stuck diagonally into the ground, is a landmark.

A satellite city located far from Macross City. An incident occurred here where the Kamujin Faction held Lynn Minmei and Kaifun hostage in the city.

A city with a large airport in its outskirts. It seems to have been a relatively important city, as VF and Destroid squadrons were deployed there.

• An incident broke out in which Zentrādi malcontents attacked the airport. The malcontents were subdued by the Destroid force in the city.
⊘ South-coast City
The city has gained autonomy from the New Unified Government, and skyscrapers are conspicuous in the city. A Zentrādi ship crashed into and stuck in the sea outside the town.
⊘ Trad City
A city in which the Zentrādi made up more than half of the population, and where a Micronization apparatus was set up. Such things as a large auditorium and a large underground facility were built in the city.

Related Matter: The Transition Of Macross City
Macross City was the center of both the political and military activity, and underwent major changes as it experienced the two Macross City Defensive Battles. The changes were at a level where it could be said that everything but the Macross was rebuilt, and the changes in the urban areas were especially remarkable.
▶ 2040
At the time of the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Inauguration of the New Unified Government, Macross City had such things as more skyscrapers, enlarged roads, and constructed waterways, and there were hardly any remnants of how it was in around 2010.

• Urban density was extremely high, and the transportation network was also highly developed.
• Multi-level roads and waterways were built in front of the Macross.
• The area around Macross Lake had become a residential and resort area.

Even in 2059, Macross City was still going strong, and was a symbol of the Earth. The multi-level roads and waterways around the Macross were the same as in 2040, and the rebuilding is considered to have been completed.

• Macross City was in danger due to a Vajra raid, however the city wasn't attacked.
