Official Setting information is in green. Extended Universe information is in blue.

The rotational center of the Milky Way galaxy—it is a supermassive black hole about 4.100 million solar masses, which powers the compact radio source Sagittarius A*. It is 8.2±0.4 kiloparsecs (26,700±1,300 ly) away from Earth in the direction of the constellations Sagittarius, Ophiuchus, and Scorpius.

0. Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*)
Size: (4.151±0.014) x 106 solar masses
Type: supermassive black hole
  • Distance from Earth: 26,000 ly
  • Orbital period: N/A (everything else orbits it)
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: exact centre of the galaxy.

  • Sagittarius A* (pronounced "Sagittarius A-Star") is a bright and very compact astronomical radio source. It is the location of a supermassive black hole, similar to those generally accepted to be at the centers of most if not all spiral and elliptical galaxies. Astronomers have been unable to observe Sgr A* in the optical spectrum because of the dust and gas between the source and Earth. It's diameter is indicated as 60 million km (for comparison, Earth is 150 million km, and Mercury is 46 million km from the Sun.) Measurements have revealed that magnetic fields cause the surrounding ring of gas and dust—with temperatures ranging from -173.3°C to 9,700°C)—to flow into an orbit around Sagittarius A*, keeping black hole's emissions low. The black hole itself is thought to emit only Hawking radiation at a negligible temperature, on the order of 10-14 kelvin. Assuming that general relativity is still a valid description of gravity near the event horizon, the Sagittarius A* radio emissions are not centered on the black hole, but arise from a bright spot in the region around the black hole, close to the event horizon—possibly in the accretion disc, or a relativistic jet of material ejected from the disc. Recent lower resolution observations revealed that the radio source of Sagittarius A* is symmetrical.

    1. G2 gas cloud
Estimated Size: mass about three times that of Earth
    Type: gas cloud
  • Distance from Earth: 26,000 ly
  • Orbital period: under investigation
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: near Sagittarius A*.

  • First noticed as something unusual in images of the center of the Milky Way in 2002, the gas cloud G2 is likely on a course taking it into the accretion zone of Sgr A*. Predictions of its orbit suggested it would make its closest approach to the black hole (a perinigricon) in early 2014, when the cloud was at a distance of just over 260 AU from the black hole. Nothing was observed during and after the closest approach of the cloud to the black hole. Astronomers observed that G2 was still intact and that the cloud was likely to have a central star. An analysis in 2014 concluded alternatively that the cloud, rather than being isolated, might be a dense clump within a continuous but thinner stream of matter, and would act as a constant breeze on the disk of matter orbiting the black hole, rather than sudden gusts that would have caused high brightness as they hit, as originally expected. Supporting this hypothesis, G1, a cloud that passed near the black hole 13 years ago, had an orbit almost identical to G2, consistent with both clouds, and a gas tail thought to be trailing G2, all being denser clumps within a large single gas stream.

    2. Orbiting stars
    Size: various
    Type: various
  • Distance from Earth: 26,000 ly
  • Orbital period: various
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: near Sagittarius A*.

  • Because they are so close to a supermassive black hole these stars are candidates for 'squeezars', stars squeezed by gravitational forces. S62 was the record holder for the closest approach to Sagittarius A*, approaching to a distance of only 16 AU (2400 million km—less than the average distance between Uranus and the Sun). At this point it reaches about 21,000 km/s, or ~7% the speed of light, making it the fastest known star. With an orbital period of 9.9 years it also has the smallest orbit of the stars orbiting SgrA*. In August 11 2020, S4714 took the record for closest approach to Sgr A*. Its closest approach to Sgr A* is just 1,900 million km. It then moves with a speed of 24,000 km per second (~8% the speed of light). However its orbital period lasts about 12 years, and its farthest distance to the galactic center is ~250 billion km. S4711 is a blue B-type star. Its closest approach to SgrA* is 21,500 million km, but its mean distance is shorter than that of S4714. Its orbital period is just 7.6 years.

The Central Parsec around Sagittarius A*
  • central 3.263 ly area around Sagittarius A*.
  • contains around 10 million stars.
  • Young Stars
  • 100 young, massive stars.
  • extend to 0.5 parsecs from Sagittarius A*.
  • concentrated in 1 or 2 disks.
  • Old Stars
  • density peaks at 0.5 parsecs from Sagittarius A* then falls further inwards.
  • a hole (or core) without old stars around the black hole.
  • Even though most of the stars are old red giant stars, the Galactic Center is also rich in massive stars. More than 100 OB and Wolf–Rayet stars have been identified there so far. They seem to have all been formed in a single star formation event a few million years ago. The existence of these relatively young stars was a surprise to experts, who expected the tidal forces from the central black hole to prevent their formation. This paradox of youth is even stronger for stars that are on very tight orbits around Sagittarius A*. The scenarios invoked to explain this formation involve either star formation in a massive star cluster offset from the Galactic Centre that would have migrated to its current location once formed, or star formation within a massive, compact gas accretion disk around the central black-hole. Current evidence favors the latter theory, as formation through a large accretion disk is more likely to lead to the observed discrete edge of the young stellar cluster at roughly 0.5 parsec. Most of these 100 young, massive stars seem to be concentrated within one or two disks, rather than randomly distributed within the central parsec. Star formation does not seem to be occurring currently at the Galactic Centre, although the Circumnuclear Disk of molecular gas that orbits the Galactic Centre at two parsecs seems a fairly favorable site for star formation. There is also a "conundrum of old age" associated with the distribution of the old stars at the Galactic Centre. The density of the old stars peaks at a distance of roughly 0.5 parsec from Sgr A*, then falls inward: instead of a dense cluster, there is a "hole", or core, around the black hole.

    Dark Hole (Megaroad-01 and fleet)
  • last known location of the Megaroad-01 Emigrant Fleet.
  • A vast, deep, open jet-black hole. A beautiful, yet heartrending enigmatic melody flows from the depths of the dark hole that fills the center of the galaxy. Unknown if this music is merely a natural development, or if intelligent life lives on the other side of the dark hole. In order to confirm what's causing it, the Megaroad-01 fleet entered the Dark Hole, without knowing if they'll be able to return to our galaxy again.

    History
  • 2016.07.07: Communications from the Megaroad-01 and its escort fleet cease near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy (news about the ship is not publicized).

A complex radio source at the center of the Milky Way, which contains a supermassive black hole. It is located in the constellation Sagittarius, and is hidden from view at optical wavelengths by large clouds of cosmic dust in the spiral arms of the Milky Way. It consists of three components, the supernova remnant Sagittarius A East, the spiral structure Sagittarius A West, and a very bright compact radio source at the center of the spiral, Sagittarius A*. These three overlap: Sagittarius A East is the largest, West appears off-center within East, and A* is at the center of West.

    0a. Sagittarius A East
Estimated Size: a few light years in size
    Type: dust and gas clouds
  • Distance from Earth: 26,000 ly
  • Orbital period: under investigation
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: centered on Sagittarius A*.

  • This feature is approximately 25 light-years in width and has the attributes of a supernova remnant from an explosive event that occurred between 35,000 and 100,000 BC. It is conjectured that Sgr A East is the remnant of the explosion of a star that was gravitationally compressed as it made a close approach to the central black hole.

    0a. Sagittarius A West
Estimated Size: a few light years in size
    Type: dust and gas clouds
  • Distance from Earth: 26,000 ly
  • Orbital period: under investigation
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: centered on Sagittarius A*.

  • It is made of several dust and gas clouds, which orbit and fall onto Sagittarius A* at velocities as high as 1,000 km per second. The surface layer of these clouds is ionized. The source of ionisation is the population of massive stars that also occupy the central parsec. Sgr A West is surrounded by a massive, clumpy torus of cooler molecular gas, the Circumnuclear Disk (CND). The nature and kinematics of the Northern Arm cloud of Sgr A West suggest that it once was a clump in the CND, which fell due to some perturbation, perhaps the supernova explosion responsible for Sgr A East. The Northern Arm appears as a very bright North–South ridge of emission, but it extends far to the East and can be detected as a dim extended source. The Western Arc is interpreted as the ionized inner surface of the CND. The Eastern Arm and the Bar seem to be two additional large clouds similar to the Northern Arm, although they do not share the same orbital plane. They have been estimated to amount for about 20 solar masses each. On top of these large scale structures, many smaller cloudlets and holes inside the large clouds can be seen. The most prominent of these perturbations is the Minicavity which is interpreted as a bubble blown inside the Northern Arm by the stellar wind of a massive star, which is not clearly identified.

    Near the Galactic Core

Macross 7, Macross 7 Dynamite, and Macross Frontier all take place in this area. The exact locations of the star systems and planets aren't known.

    0. Sagittarius B2
Estimated Size: about 3 million times the mass of the Sun.
Type: giant molecular cloud of gas and dust.
  • Orbital period: under investigation
  • Near: Sagittarius A
  • Location: about 120 parsecs (390 ly) from the center of the Milky Way.

  • This complex is the largest molecular cloud in the vicinity of the core and one of the largest in the galaxy, spanning a region about 45 parsecs (150 ly) across. The internal structure of this cloud is complex, with varying densities and temperatures. The cloud is divided into three main cores, designated north (N), middle or main (M) and south (S) respectively. Thus Sgr B2(N) represents the north core. The sites Sgr B2(M) and Sgr B2(N) are sites of prolific star formation. The 5-parsec-wide core of the cloud is a star-forming region that is emitting about 10 million times the luminosity of the Sun. The Sgr B2 complex contains cold dust grains consisting of a silicon core surrounded by a mantle of water ice and various carbon compounds. The surfaces of these grains allow chemical reactions to occur by accreting molecules that can then interact with neighboring compounds. The resulting compounds can then evaporate from the surface and join the molecular cloud.

    Vajra Homeworld

A habitable planet discovered by the Macross Frontier and Macross Galaxy Fleets in 2059. The homeworld of the alien Vajra creatures. It was discovered in 2059. It is one of the few A-class habitable planets. It is also known that the Macross Frontier Fleet—having won the battle against the Macross Galaxy Fleet—has begun colonizing the planet. It is also noteworthy that there is a large amount of Fold Quartz, a rare substance, on the planet.

Also, as it appeared to be a Fold Quartz treasure house, the planet also had an important significance as far as the Galaxy Fleet was concerned. A vast hydrosphere can be perceived even from space. Because it has such things as a vast hydrosphere, a ground that is rich in green, and a breathable atmosphere, the Vajra Homeworld was regarded as a promising Emigrant Planet. Zola

A remote planet inhabited by the Zolans in the 67th Planetary District. Planet Zola already had its own humanoid race—the Zolansand culture when it was discovered by humans from Earth. Zolans have a sac-like organ in their abdomen. However, their other body structures and intelligence are the same as those of Earth's humankind. It appears that they could also mate with Earthlings. If a Zolan from planet Zola used a Miclone Device, they could also become giant-sized. The Zolans wear a symbiotic creature—called a Cat-Snakey—around their necks. Zolans have a Zola-specific language. Given that the letters are also unique, some of the models of computers used on Zola display the Zolan language. However, the letters currently used are different from the old ones, and it seems that only the symbiotic Cat-Snakey are able to read the old letters. The cultural level in the late 2040's is close to that of developed countries on Earth in the first half of the 20th century (Zolans have radio, but they don't have television, and so on and so forth). However, they seem to have obtained spacecraft and VFs through contact with Earth's humankind, and there is a bias toward them in the Zolan's technological level.

  • homeworld of the Zolans, and the Galactic Whales Graveyard.
  • Zola is characterized by a hydrosphere and untouched natural areas that are both extremely large, probably because urban development hasn't progressed very far. Zola doesn't seem to have become a destination for the migration of Earth's humankind, because the propagation of germs on the planet is remarkable—due to the influence of the migratory Galactic Whales—and even small injuries can be life-threatening. As machines are also disrupted when the Galactic Whales draw near, that also made Zola unsuitable even for sightseeing. A graveyard where the Galactic Whales?having reached the end of their life?fall into. The Galactic Whales that burn out here "give back" to Planet Zola. ZZNKQB National Broadcaster. Zola's Environment Zola has natural areas such as hydrospheres, forests, and arid regions, and one can say that it is a suitable environment for living in—except for the problem of the excessive propagation of germs. What is special about Zola is that it has a strong connection to the Galactic Whales, and the ecosystem has formed to include the herds of Galactic Whales. Zola's Flora and Fauna Zola's flora and fauna are similar to those of the Earth. The plants are very similar to those on Earth, but the trees also have structures that appear to be rhizomes. However, most animals are marsupials, so to speak, with a pouch in the abdomen (the pouches are not necessarily for child-rearing). This is the same for the indigenous Zolan people, who have the characteristics of Zola's creatures. Animals include the Fukuro-kamome (Pouch-Seagull), and the Fukuro-nezumi-risu (Opossum-Squirrel).

    Galactic Bar

  • 25,000–28,000 ly from Sol.
  • estimated half-length spanning from 3,000–16,000 ly.
  • some advocate that there are two distinct bars, one nestled within the other.
  • In the inner few kpc (around 10,000 light-years radius) is a dense concentration of mostly old stars in a roughly spheroidal shape called the bulge. It has been proposed that the Milky Way lacks a bulge formed due to a collision and merger between previous galaxies, and that instead it only has a pseudobulge formed by its central bar. However, confusion in the literature between the (peanut shell)-shaped structure created by instabilities in the bar, versus a possible bulge with an expected half-light radius of 0.5 kpc, abounds. The nature of the Milky Way's bar is actively debated. The bar may be surrounded by a ring called the "5-kpc ring" that contains a large fraction of the molecular hydrogen present in the Milky Way, as well as most of the Milky Way's star formation activity. Viewed from the Andromeda Galaxy, it would be the brightest feature of the Milky Way.

    0. Pistol Star
    Size: 27.5 solar masses
    Type: blue hypergiant
  • Distance from Earth: approx. 25,000 ly
  • Orbital period: under investigation
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: in the direction of Sagittarius.

  • One of the most luminous known in the Milky Way. It is one of many massive young stars in the Quintuplet cluster in the Galactic Center region. The star owes its name to the shape of the Pistol Nebula, which it illuminates. It would be visible to the naked eye as a fourth magnitude star if it were not for the interstellar dust that completely hides it from view in visible light. The star is thought to have ejected almost 10 solar masses of material in giant outbursts perhaps 4,000 to 6,000 years ago (as observed from Earth). Its stellar wind is over 10 billion times stronger than the Sun's. Its exact age and future are not known, but it is expected to end in a brilliant supernova or hypernova in 1 to 3 million years. The mass is equally uncertain, thought to have been over 100 times the Sun when initially formed, but now considerably less due to extreme mass loss. Later studies have reduced its estimated luminosity making it a candidate luminous blue variable about one-third as luminous as the binary star system Eta Carinae. Even so, it radiates about as much energy in 20 seconds as the Sun does in a year.

    0. LBV 1806-20
    Size: 36 solar masses
Type: luminous blue variable and likely binary star
  • Distance from Earth: approx. 28,000 ly
  • Orbital period: under investigation
  • Near: under investigation
  • Location: towards the center of the Milky Way.

  • It has an estimated variable luminosity of around two million times that of the Sun, which makes it one of the most luminous stars in the galaxy. It is highly luminous but is invisible from the Solar System at visual wavelengths because less than one billionth of its visible light reaches us. LBV 1806-20 lies at the core of radio nebula G10.0–0.3, which is believed to be primarily powered by its stellar wind. It is a member of the 1806-20 open cluster, itself a component of W31, one of the largest H II regions in the Milky Way. Cluster 1806-20 is made up of some highly unusual stars, including four Wolf–Rayet stars, several OB stars, and a magnetar (SGR 1806-20). To account for the doubled HeI lines in its spectrum and the inconsistent mass, luminosity and age estimates, LBV 1806-20 has been proposed to be a binary. The emission lines are single, so only one star appears to have a dense stellar wind as might be expected from an LBV.
