Warrior Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle |
BACKGROUND
The British Army's Warrior group of vehicles, built by Alvis Vehicles (formerly GKN Defence,) are a battlefield tested range of highly reliable and efficient vehicles tested in both the Middle East, and on United Nations operations in Bosnia. Almost 800 Warriors are in service with Mechanised Divisions of the British Armed Forces. This Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle carries a driver, commander, gunner, and up to a maximum of 8 passengers, (two fully equipped British Army Fire Teams,) and is capable of operating for up to 48 hours non-stop in NBC conditions. Noted below is the standard layout for the Warrior, but it is capable of fielding a variety of different weapons.
The Warrior's roles are varied and it can be used as an Infantry Section Vehicle, Infantry Command, Repair or Recovery Vehicle, Observation Post Vehicle, Artillery Command or carrying Vehicle or an Anti-Tank Weapon Carrying Vehicle. The aluminium armour construction provides protection against 14.5mm armour piercing rounds, 155mm air burst shell fragments and 9 kg anti-tank mines. Applique armour can be added to provide enhanced protection against threats. The AFV is capable of also carrying weapon fits ranging from machine pistols to 90 mm guns, mortars and missile systems.
