Flight Suits in general
Most flight suits have...
  • Independent oxygen supply
  • Basic survival supplies
  • • folding knife, small water bottle, small flashlight, strobe light, 3 signal flare, whistle, mirror, camouflage paint, matches, fire starter, tourniquet, couple of pens, and a notebook.
Space-use flight suits also have...
  • Emergency patching kit
  • • duct tape, patches, etc. for fixing small leaks. Can attempt medium-sized leaks, but the patch will fail in 1D10 minutes. 3 uses.
All flight suits...
  • reduce blunt/impact damage (falls, punches, crashes, etc) by half, up to the allowed SDC of the suit.
In general the helmet is...
  • the suit's AR: +2
  • the suit's SDC: x1.5

VF pilot suits—which incorporate OTM and the technology in traditional spacesuits and anti-G suits—have spread as essential general equipment in Macross. Spacesuits at the time of the ASS-1's arrival in 1999 had shortcomings—such as being heavy, having a reduced range of motion in the joints, and short extravehicular activity times—and it was difficult for them to be put to military use. VF pilots in particular desired the functions of a compact anti-G suit, as they would be piloting while enduring high G levels while inside a narrow cockpit. The introduction of OTM didn't mean that they were able to produce a spacesuit that perfectly satisfied all of those items. Airtight clothes and helmets were developed that included anti-G, anti-radiation, and other life preservation mechanisms that are desired when active in outer space. However, the life-preservation functions in spacesuits obstructed the pilot's sensory organs when fighting. As a result, the VF pilot suits that were completed at the time of the First Interstellar War were light spacesuits that were compact, had excellent movement, and were closer to an aircraft's pressure-resistant suit than a spacesuit. Even after the First Interstellar War, the pilot suits continued to be developed as anti-G suits and light spacesuits. By the end of the 2050's the burdens on the pilot when flying a VF exceeded the limits of the human body. Following this, a suit that exceeded the concept of the conventional pilot suits—called the EX-Gear System—also appeared. It allowed a closer link between the VF and the operator. This system could also be operated as a powered suit. In addition to the traditional life preservation functions in the VF helmet, and with its functions as the pilot-and-system interface, and a powered suit's "armour", it reached a point where a wide range of functions were being pursued in the pilot suits. The spacesuits for VF pilots excel at movement and anti-G abilities. However, there also seems to have been a problem with their high cost. Therefore, spacesuits for various other roles and general-purpose models were also developed.
Flight suits are not suits of armour. Their first job is to provide life-support in extremely low (or high) heat, and reduced (or no) oxygen environments. Their second job is as a G-suit. As such, they are complicated pressure suits filled with liquid cooling tubes (for cooling) and inflatable bladders around the abdomen and legs (for G resistance). The suits also include electronics, batteries, and an oxygen supply. Most suits include a bio-monitor that continuously monitors the pilot's vital signs. More advanced suits also have advanced computing capabilities—akin to an advanced smartphone or laptop—that the pilot can access through a control panel usually located in the chest or forearms. The pilot suits designed for use in space are hardened to protect against micro-meteor strikes, and offer a small amount of ballistic protection.
Note: player characters could have wildly different flight suits depending on which era the game is taking place in and what organization(s) they are affiliated with.

  • Cost: $2,500 (¥250,000) new, replica* (2018- ): $500, replica* (2028- ): $250
  • * doesn't protect against heat or space radiation. Popular with within-atmosphere aviation enthusiasts after SWI.

In use from: between 2004 (first VF-0 completed) and 2008 In the Unification War period, VF pilot spacesuits appeared to have been at an experimental production stage, and the pilots of the experimental production VFs wore within-atmosphere anti-G suits. Basically, it is a specification common to the fighter aircraft that use OTM—such as the F-14A+ Kai—and the shoulder and back protectors are worn as harness fasteners. The helmet specifically designed for the VF-0 is airtight. By removing the chin parts, the helmet could also became an open-style helmet. The oxygen supply hose is not in the form of a mask, but is attached to the rear of the helmet. There are a lot of pilots who paint original personal marks on the helmets and suits that they are provided with. Roy's personal emblem is painted on the visor part of his helmet. Edgar was especially known for having used several marks—his helmet colouring was changed to a keynote based in green. As he has an interest in primitive art, he might have been obsessed with the designs on his helmet. F-14A+ Kai ver.: The helmet is one with an oxygen mask, identical to conventional helmets.
The G-resistant suit supplied to ground-based pilots belonging to the Unified Space Forces. The materials and functions are almost the same as those for conventional fighter aircraft. For the F-14s and VF-0s operating at sea, a floating collar (life preserver) is mandatory. The helmet is almost directly adapted from those developed for space fighter crews. However, OTM is introduced into the materials, making the helmet lighter than CFRP*, reducing the burden on the pilot's neck—which is exposed to high G forces. The helmet has a full-view visor, which was revolutionary at-the-time, and the oxygen hose is attached to the back side of the helmet to reduce the impediment to the movement of the pilot's neck. A similar helmet was also developed for the Unified Naval Forces, which operated the F-14 D+ (an OTM improved fighter), and had a close cooperative relationship with the space forces. That helmet had an oxygen hose connector on the mouth piece to match the cockpit specifications of conventional aircraft.
    * CFRP = Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer

  • In use from: 2009 The regular armed forces pilot suit. It is a G suit for fighter aircraft, and has good airtightness. At the time of the First Interstellar War, both an airtight style helmet and an open-style helment existed. As the model that was used during the First Interstellar War period and for several years in the postwar period, it is the earliest VF pilot spacesuit. The design was remodelled in the several years of the postwar period. The influence of atmospheric anti-G suits, which were used in the same period, can be strongly observed in this pilot suit. Although white and green models were typical, Roy Fokker, Hikaru Ichijō and others wear ones with differing colours. Hikaru's uniform, as well as the inner shirt, was lavishly coloured red, and the visor of the helmet was also decorated in red.
The officially adopted model (Early Period model, 2009-) has equipment for a slight degree of activity in a vacuum. It was used from the Macross's return voyage through the First Interstellar War. It was standard equipment in 2009. The case on the back of the backside is a parachute sack.

  • In use from: 2010 The G-resistant suit for Unified Forces Valkyrie pilots. It also functions as an airtight suit as it was designed for space combat. It was used in conjunction with the introduction of the improved Block 6 VF-1 Valkyrie. The suit has improved functionality and survivability over the early period flight suit. It has a simple power-assist function to improve vehicle control during periods of high-G. There is an ID plate in the chest, and a radio in the right arm. The instrument panels on the pilot suit's arms include ID plates. In addition, the left arm is also equipped with an emergency short-range radio. The [yellow] lines on the shoulders, wrists, and legs emit light when in darkness.
The officially adopted model (Later Period model, 2010-) is an improved version that was adopted from the production of the Block 6 VF-1. Functions for activity in a vacuum have been added to the suit, and survivability has been improved. The suit wasn't produced in a sufficient quantity immediately following its introduction, and for a little while it was used concurrently with the preceding model.

  • In use from: 2012 Developed for the Humankind Seeding Project and in time for the launch of the Megaroad-01. The suit has various enhanced functions for life preservation in deep space. It was used by the VF units in the first Long Range Emigrant Fleet, and was the latest pilot suit at the time. Its functions as a spacesuit have been enhanced. The helmet visor acts as a HUD.
The HY-12 pilot suit was developed for the VF-4 in 2009, and was officially adopted in 2012. It was developed in conjunction with the launch of the Megaroad 01. All sorts of functional enhancements for activity in deep space were performed on the suit in accordance with the Mankind Seeding Project. The at-the-time new VF-4 was primarily intended for space-use from the beginning. It also puts a greater burden on the pilot than the VF-1 does. So, it was necessary to improve the suit's functions, including extending its operational time. Even though the suit's silhouette isn't as sleek as it could have been due to the limitations of the technology available at the time, its functionality is sufficient, and the temperature range in which the suit can operate is wide enough to ensure survivability. The specifications for this type of suit were indicated in a technical order, and it was made from common materials that could be procured on Earth immediately after the war—making it less expensive than the suits that appeared later. Many units in the Earth area continued to use these suits without replacing them for newer models until their Valkyries were decommissioned. Even though the fabric in the top layer is somewhat limited to avoid vacuum deposition in outer space, it is available in a wide variety of colours. The suits could be customized for each squadron or even for personal designs. In 2012, the suit was manufactured in-house by Stonewell Bellcom. However, the suit manufacturer has since become an independent company under the Stonewell Bellcom umbrella.

  • In use from: 2019 The TSV-19 pilot suit for the VF-4 was officially adopted in 2019. The Unified Forces refer to it a tactical suit. Functionally, the suit is a variant of the HY-12, but with the use of OTMat (OTM-derived materials), it is not only lighter, but also has an increase in the so-called "comfort" when wearing, such as being easier to move. The lenses on the side of the helmet are in a complex unit that includes sensors and a projector for displaying information onto the inner surface of the canopy. The markers are intended to be easily visible when drifting, but the ones on the shoulders were also seen on the suit adopted for the VF-1 in 2010. The markers on the sleeves are a newly added feature on this suit.

  • In use from: 2023 As VFs became more sophisticated, the tactical suit's support of the pilot became more important, and the TSV-23—an improved version of the TSV-19—had enhanced muscular functions to assist the pilot's operation of the VF at high G-forces. Each time a new VF was introduced, a tactical suit has appeared to match the improved capabilities of the VF. Today, however, the mainstream is EX-Gear, a simplified powered suit that supports the pilot's activities outside a Valkyrie, and the cockpits of VFs have been converted to a standard that can accommodate it.

  • In use from: 2030 Super Long Range Emigrants had become constantly launched, and the pilot suit itself was enhanced with functions as a spacesuit. The suit features a loose silhouette. Pads have been installed in the shoulders, elbows, and knees. The model was also for use within the atmosphere. An alloy tektite pad is enclosed in the forearms. Shoulder pads (protectors) cover both shoulders. Looking at the inside of them, once can see that they are quite thick. The shield at the top of the head became a clear visor, and the helmet's field of vision is wider than that of the helmets up until then. In 2040, it was the pilot suit for both in-atmosphere and outer-space use. Even though it was the general pilot suit at that time, it had an anti-G ability that enabled it to cope even with the YF-19 super-high manoeuvrability VF.
The flight suit developed around the time of the introduction of the VF-11 and was adopted as the official suit by the New Unified Forces. It is widely used as the most standard type. The Mk. III, introduced around 2037, was mainly issued to squadrons in the Earth area.

  • In use from: 2040 The experimental G-resistant pilot suit worn by Guld when he piloted the YF-21. Unlike the Unified Forces pilot suit, it has a largish backpack secured by a harness. The special helmet is also an interface that connects the wearer and the aircraft, through which the aircraft is controlled. The piloting of the YF-21—which is controlled by a direct cerebral link—requires a high level of mental concentration. Guld's appearance while piloting the YF-21 is reminiscent of a meditating Buddhist monk. A mechanism called the Brain Direct Image (BDI) was built into the YF-21 Variable Fighter, which was developed in 2040, in an attempt to improve the reaction speed when in high-speed manoeuvres; by aligning the pilot's brainwaves and the VF fuselage. When this system had its trial run, a helmet with a dedicated interface included in it was developed, and it assisted in connecting the pilot's thoughts with the VF's sensors and control system. The experimental pilot suit for the YF-21 supported the BDI Brainwave Control System. There are terminals and connectors for brainwave control in the helmet. The thoughts of the pilot are directly connected to the aircraft through the interface that covers the head, and the system actualized lag-less actions.

  • In use from: 2045 The flight suit that Battle 7 Captain Max wore when he piloted the VF-22. It appears to have been equipped with a flight support BDI System interface. It has a largish backpack secured by a harness. The special helmet is also an interface that connects the wearer and the aircraft, through which the aircraft is controlled. Brain Direct Image (BDI) was developed in an attempt to improve the reaction speed when in high-speed manoeuvres by aligning the pilot's brainwaves and the VF fuselage. Although the BDI System was drastically simplified and installed as a support system in the VF-22, its pilots sortied equipped with a dedicated helmet that assisted in connecting the pilot's thoughts with the VF's sensors and control system. There are terminals and connectors for the BDI Brainwave Control system in the helmet. The thoughts of the pilot are directly connected to the aircraft through the interface that covers the head, and the system actualized lag-less actions.
The VF-22 with brainwave control uses a suit and seat as the interface between the pilot and the BDI itself, which is in the rear of the cockpit. A special suit is required to acquire and transmit the pilot's brainwave data. However, even without the suit, the pilot can still fly and fight using a conventional control system—just without receiving support via brainwaves.

Even though the helmet's field of vision is vast, it has inferior rigidity. The pilot suit for Mylene also has functions like a spacesuit, similar to those used by the Unified Forces. Mylene piloted a Valkyrie wearing it when training and on operational missions for Sound Force. The shape of Ray's helmet is the same as the other members' equipment, but the colouring is based on light blue. Perhaps because he is a former pilot, Ray wears his flight suit more neatly than Basara or Mylene. Vihīda's helmet also has the same colouring as her pilot suit. The helmet looks a little tight when worn on Vihīda's large build, but it seems to have been designed so that it does not interfere with her performance. Her suit is custom-made equipment to match her size, which is over 2 m tall. Basara rarely uses this equipment.

  • In use from: 2062 The new New Unified Space Forces standard tactical suit developed in conjunction with the introduction of the VF-31A Kairos. It is fully compatible with the EX-Gear cockpit system that's installed in the YF-24 and later VF models. The power-assist functions have been almost entirely replaced by skin-like artificial muscles. This artificial muscle is a sheet of a nanotube organic fibre material lined up horizontally, which expands and contracts when an electric current is applied to it with hardly any change in thickness in the process. This is stacked with a layer that matches the movements of the human muscles, a layer that controls blood flow, and a layer that takes on the role of a harness in conjunction with the seat and so on, to give the suit the functionality of a tactical suit. Since the power-assist function operates according to the pilot's myoelectric potential, the time lag between the pilot's body and movement is equal to zero. With the TSX-62, the total weight of the suit was reduced by 5%. By using new materials, such as a bulletproof, blade-resistant, heat-resistant, chemical-resistant, and electromagnetic-wave resistant layer for the outer surface skin, it was possible to reduce the weight while having the same or better performance as a conventional suit. The advantages are that the tactile sense of the pilot's skin can feel things more vividly, and it is easier to move around. On the other hand, when the suit is actually hit by bullets or impacts—even though they don't penetrate—they tend to cause pain, so it is possible to select a conventional specification suit according to the squadron's duties. The outer skin itself is made of a fibrous material with a fairly high strength. However, most of the bulletproof and blade-resistant capabilities are manifested by the hardening of the internal muscle fibre skin at the moment an impact is detected on the outer surface skin. This function is applied to protect the pilot's body from the tremendous G forces during an emergency ejection (of course, the ejection is performed with EX-Gear attached to the suit). An emergency ejection from an aircraft that has not been completely thawed from ISC means death. However, it's said that if a pilot wears this suit, they can expect to survive approximately 50% of the time with only a few percent of the ISC unthawed.

  • In use from: 2062 A pilot suit for Variable Fighters independently upgraded by the Chaos planetary conglomerate. Adoption of the suit began around the same time as the TSX-62, and it has been deployed to VF units in the Chaos carrier air wing. The main parts of the suit are the same as the TSX-62. It is the product of a manufacturer under the umbrella of Shinsei Industry. Currently, Chaos is actively marketing the suit to planetary nations and Emigrant Fleets, so it may be adopted by other VF units and private military providers. The design relies more on the suit material than hard resin protectors, but the overall performance is not much different from that of the Unified Forces' suit. There are differences in the auxiliary parts of the suit (the life support mechanisms and control of the muscle-fibre skin) from the New Unified Forces model. And because fine adjustments are made according to the individuality of each pilot—such as body shape and constitution—the suit is highly valued as it is comfortable to use and the physical load during high manoeuvrability is reduced. Needless to say, these improvements were in anticipation of the introduction of the VF-31S Siegfried, and the S model is said to have enhanced the VF-31's performance even further. The VF-31S Siegfried-specific suit seems to have unique functions to protect the pilot, and it looks like the muscle fibre skin layer has been increased by one or two more layers, but the details are unknown. Incidentally, the suit's auxiliary equipment itself is compact, and the entire suit is about 10% lighter than the TSX-62. In addition, there is also information that a higher capability than the TSX-62 is used for the optical weapon resistant coating of the outer surface skin. The Chaos version specification will be partially fed back into a refined version of the TSX-62. Both suit's helmets share the same visor projection system like a conventional VF helmet. The forehead projector at the top of the visor has a sensor located in the centre front that allows the wearer to easily perceive the surrounding environment. Therefore, by processing the scanned information into an image and projecting it on the visor, the wearer can operate even in darkness. The neck protector functions as an oxygen tank for external activities. However, the substances necessary for life support are normally inhaled and discharged by connecting the backpack connectors to the seat. In addition to the circulatory system for controlling body temperature, the backpack contains a propellant tank for the movement thrusters. The suits are semi-custom made, in the same way as they have been up to now. However, if the pilot doesn't care about the colours or markings, than they usually choose the one that fits the best from several sizes of suit, and it generally fits them—because the muscle fibre skin is highly elastic, it can absorb small differences in size. In recent years, the EX-Gear cockpit has become the uniform standard, so people who are too short or too tall will not fit into it in the first place. The suit colours can be selected when placing the order. In the Unified Forces, there are many cases where the colours are unified for each air wing or squadron. However, in some cases, such as in Chaos, it seems that the pilots are allowed to arrange the colours according to their personal preferences (depending on the situation).
