Invincible class Aircraft Carrier |
BACKGROUND
Designed to replace the post-Second World War Aircraft Carriers HMS Ark Royal and HMS Hermes the Invincible Class carriers were designed to be command headquarters for a task group, and to support the operations of the short take off and vertical landing aircraft and helicopters. They were built as through-deck carriers without the now characteristic ski ramp which was added for better performance for the Sea Harrier to allow it to carry more fuel and armament. The first ship of the class to be built was name HMS Invincible and was launched in 1977, officially being commisioned in 1980. The second ship of the class was HMS Illustrius, and the third, HMS Indomitable, was later renamed HMS Ark Royal so as to continue the tradition of having an aircraft carrier in service named Ark Royal.
HMS Invincible has thus far served in two wars serving with distinction in both the Falklands War as the Flagship for the Royal Navy Fleet there, and as the Royal Navy Flagship during the Gulf War ten years later. HMS Invincible is still the Flagship fo the Royal Navy and will to be so for some time yet as its replacement the much larger CVF is still on the drawing board. It will be a neccesary change for the Royal Navy as the Harriers presently in use will be eventually replaced by the JSF, (Joint Strike Fighter,) under development. The JSF however requires a slighty longer runway and would not be able to use the Ski Ramp system that the Harrier uses. The Invincible Class Carriers will remain the core of the Royal Navy Fleet, and a familiar site at the Royal Navy Dockyards in Portsmouth for at least the majority of the first quarter of the 21st Century.

NOTES:
- Depleting the MDC of the main body will put the Carrier out of commission. All internal systems will shut down, the ship itself will be an unsalvageable sinking wreck.
- Destroying the command tower will instantly kill the command staff and deprive the ship of all forms of long range communications, radar and targeting. Destroying the main sensory array behind the command tower will have the same effect, but the command staff will not be killed instantly.
- Destroying the flight deck will impair the Carriers ability to deploy and recover Aircraft.
- Destruction of the Ski Ramp will force the Carriers complement of Harriers to use VTOL take off's instead of STOL take offs.
- Depleting the MDC of the propellors will leave the ship adrift until such time as they are repaired or the ship is towed back to port.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:
1. BRITISH AEROSPACE SURFACE-TO-AIR/SURFACE TO SURFACE SEA DART MISSILE SYSTEM(2):
The only Anti-Aircraft weapon of the Invincible Class Aircraft Carriers is the Sea Dart Missile Launcher. The inclusion of the anti-air defences were due to the Royal Navy's losses to Exocet Missiles during the Falklands War, however the Sea Dart system is soon to be removed from the Invincible Carriers as the Type-23 Frigates and Type-42 Destroyers that act as Escort to the Carriers will provide anti-air cover.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Aircraft
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Missile
- RANGE: 80 km / 28 km against Surface targets
- SPEED: Mach 2
- DAMAGE: 1D6X00 M.D.
- BLAST RADIUS: 15 m
- RATE OF FIRE: Volleys of 1-2 missiles. (Takes 5 minutes to change both missiles)
- PAYLOAD: Each launcher holds 1 missile. Once the rockets are expended the launcher is empty and must be replenished. 22 missiles are held in reserve
2. THALES NEDERLAND GOALKEEPER 30 mmM CIWS (3):
As part of the close in defence complement this weapon is designed to engage aircraft and missiles at close range to the Carrier. The system is controlled by Surface Weapons Officers within the command tower and is very effective against low flying aircraft.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Missile
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Aircraft
- RANGE: 1.6 km
- DAMAGE: 3D6 M.D. per 10 round burst
- RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the controller's number of hand-to-hand attacks. If set on automatic by the Principal Weapons Officer it can fire up to 4 bursts per round.
- PAYLOAD: 300 rounds
3. OERLIKON-CONTRAVES & BAE SYSTEMS GAM-B01 20 mm GUNS (2):
In addition to the Goalkeeper system are two 20 mm Close Range Guns which are manually operated deck mounted weapons designed to engage aircraft, missiles, and close in small vessels.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Missile
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Aircraft
- RANGE: 1.6 km
- DAMAGE: 2D6 M.D. per 10 round burst
- RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the controller's number of hand-to-hand attacks. If set on automatic by the Principal Weapons Officer it can fire up to 4 bursts per round.
- PAYLOAD: 300 rounds
4. THALES DEFENCE'S TYPE 675(2) JAMMING SYSTEM
Used to defeat hostile radar and Sonar, the ECM/ESM, (Electronic Counter Measures,) jammers will confuse all radar and sonar so that the ships is much harder to be detected or locked onto with radar/sonar guided weapons. This does not give away the position of the ship but it does let the enemy know that they are there. The only way that it can be defeated is with ECCM, (Electronic Counter-Counter Measures.)
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Block Enemy Radar/Sonar
- RANGE: 50 km
- RULES: Confuses all radar/sonar within 50 km, but can be defeated by ECCM, if the ECCM operator gets a higher Sensory Instruments percentage roll against the ECM operator.
5. HUNTING ENGINEERING SEA GNAT CHAFF/FLARE DECOY DISPENSORS (8):
The Carriers Counter-measures dispensors consist of eight six-barrelled 130 mm Chaff/Flare launchers. Triggered by the Principal Weapons Officer, (PWO,) they will release either a chaff cloud or single flare depending on what the PWO chooses. They are used to confuse enemy missiles attacking the Carrier. Smart missiles get a 20% bonus when rolling on the below chart.
01-50 Missile/s detonated by Chaff/Flare
51-75 Missile/s loses track of target and veers away in wrong direction, (may lock onto another target)
76-00 No effect, missile is still on target
- Payload: Three of each type (per launcher) Reloads are automatic with 3 reloads per launcher before a manual reload is required. Stores hold 10 full reloads of the system.
SYSTEMS OF NOTE:
- LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS: The Carriers have sufficient food, water, fuel and amenities to support up to 1400 people for up to 6 months. In an emergency the Carrier can support up to 2500 people at one time, though living conditions onboard will get extremely cramped at that point.
- LONG-RANGE LASER/SATELLITE RELAY COMMUNICATIONS: The impressive communications array of the Carrier can communicate with up to 500 craft simultaneously at ranges of up to 1,440 km. This range can be boosted indefinitely by using satellites or other spacecraft as to relay communications.
- LONG-RANGE RADAR: The radar array of the escort carrier is equally as impressive as the communication system, and can track and identify up to 500 craft simultaneously. The radar system has a 3,200 km range.
- ENGINES: The Carrier features four engines, all of which are Rolls Royce Olympus TM3B Gas Turbine Engines generating 97,000hp.
- REPAIR/RESUPPLY: The Invincible Class Carriers are capable of repairing all but the most serious damage to aircraft on board to enable the aircraft to remain operational due to a large Air Crew of several hundred Air Frames Mechanics and Electricians.
- DECOYS: The Sea Gnats are mounted on Hunting Engineering 130mm six-barrel launchers consisting of chaff and infra-red decoys.
