BACKGROUND
The MBR-04-Mk VI Tomahawk is an airframe that represents the Type 04 series that most successfully achieved the "Destroid" land-warfare weapons group, which put Over-Technology (OTM) to practical use. The abbreviation of the model number, MBR (Main Battle Robot), indicates that this craft was developed as a humanoid walking weapon that takes the place of mainline tanks. The great firepower and heavy armour of the Tomahawk's design puts importance on bombardment combat.
This craft is operated as the core of the ground warfare ability that forms a counterpart to the variable fighters (VF). A considerable number were deployed to the SDF-1 Macross at the time of it's space-launch, and one theory states that 440 were loaded aboard the SDF-1. On the SDF-1, the Tomahawk was developed for such things as performing interception on the surface of the SDF-1, and was often operated as a cost-saving battle strength; and made large military gains in the battles with the Zentraadi Forces in the First Interstellar War.
After the conclusion of the First Interstellar War, the Tomahawk was deployed to such places as city outskirts, and they also engaged in the preservation of public order. They were mobilized when Zentraadi made trouble.
Development
The prototype of the MBR-04-Mk VI started development in an airframe called the Type 04 (MBR-04) after the trial manufacturing from the Type 01 to the Type 03 had elapsed. Designing began in 2002.05, and in the following year, in 2003.12, it shifted over to the prototype. In 2007.02, the initial model of the Type 04, which was equivalent to the Mk I, was completed, and the flow of development advanced to the roll-out of the Mk VI, in November of the same year. Both the MK IV, which had a favourable outcome as a result of its manoeuvres, as well as the Mk VI output-strengthened model, switched over to mass production.
Structure
In contrast to the VF which didn't have room in its structure as it had to have both the transformation mechanisms and a general-purposefulness, within the airframe structure of the Type 04 there is plenty of room that performs some process. That is linked to the possibilities of such things as the design and quantity of armaments installed, and it promoted the development of Type 04 variations. This craft is an example that makes the best use in the direction of heaviness of such features, and it came to acquire a firepower and bullet-resistance that symbolizes the Destroids.
Because there was surplus internal space within the airframe that the Tomahawk was able to be equipped with complicated internal firearms like the gun cluster. The enhancement of bullet resistance was stressed in the design. However, the Tomahawk wasn't endowed with an armour strength that could endure a direct hit from a Zentraadi mobile weapon's guns. The armaments are concentrated in the upper half of the body, and it is understood that the body units of the Type 04 have an ability to be equipped with a great amount of equipment.
The hemisphere on the left side of the back is a coolant tank. Compared to the other Type 04 series craft, it is possible to guess from the projections in the back that the Tomahawk has enlarged systems along with the built-in firearms.
The Tomahawk can also do jump movements due to two thrust nozzles that are installed in the lower region of the back. Moreover, there are radiators installed in the left and right hips with exhaust ports in the rear, and as such things as lights are installed in every part of the airframe, the specifications that it is presumed to be operated on the ground can be seen everywhere. There are also cases where it was fought enemy mobile weapons that had penetrated inside the SDF-1. However, it is difficult to say that during those battles the Tomahawk made the best use of it's abilities.
The main frame from the waist to the leg is used a common module of each Type 04 model in the series. Included within this module are the thermonuclear reactor and the driving system's ambulatory system; and it consolidates the OTM that has been put into the Destroids.? Moreover, the integration of the productions lines was aimed for with this collaboration, and an improvement in productivity and serviceability was achieved.
Armament
Even though the MBR-04 at the time of the Mk I was a simple airframe that had only a rocket launcher as a fixed armament, it attained a specification equipped with diverse armaments as a result of attempts to increase its firepower. Even though one of the disadvantages of the design that turned both arms into beam guns is a degradation of the MBR-04's hand-to-hand fighting abilities, the beam guns were used because results in manoeuvres showed that the MBR-04 was able to annihilate the enemy before they drew near. (It's said that in live-fire exercises that took place in the Mohabi Desert immediately before roll-out, the MBR-04 annihilated 10-odd unmanned tanks in an instant.) The fact is that this craft boasts of an extremely high offensive ability and in medium-range bombardment battles, the MBR-04 demonstrates a performance that surpasses that of such things as the other Destroids and VFs.
Even thought the Tomahawk has inferior anti-aircraft abilities, it is endowed with diverse armaments that are not inferior to the (Destroid) airframes that were started later. The Tomahawk boasts of the most-balanced firepower in the Destroid series. On the other hand, it is unfit for hand-to-hand combat because both arms were converted into fixed armaments, and it demonstrated it's real worth by cooperating with other Destroid models.
The Tomahawk played a major role when they carried out a simultaneous volley immediately after the Daedalus broke into the Zentraadi ship in the Daedalus Attack. The Tomahawk greatly contributed to the tactic as the SDF-1's trump card by the height of its firepower.
Even though bombardment attacks under gravity are the original operation method, there was little chance to do that when the Tomahawk were placed in the SDF-1. It's possible to say that the battle at Mars Sera Base was a rare case.
