2058 AD, the Milky Way's Age of Discovery [Age of Exploration].
Variable Fighter Valkyries had appeared in the battlefield in the earlier Unification War era...... Valkyries are developed for several dozen years, and space is flooded with every type of old and new Valkyrie. In that sort of period, races were created that make use of restored Valkyries from all over the ages.
The name of the races is "Vanquish".
These air races of the Milky Way's Age of Discovery with their extreme rules where victory or defeat is decided by Battroid hand-to-hand fighting and, naturally, Valkyrie control techniques, receive overwhelming support from the many fans created from the fleet citizens who are forced to have a monotonous life. A new story starts now, in the setting of a Vanquish race where groups like the New Unified Forces and PMC (Military Providers) are said to be secretly participating in the competition.

Message From the Author Ukyō Kodachi I was one of the great many fans from the generation around the time of "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", "Macross Plus" and "Macross 7". With the excitement savoured at that time and the thrilling feeling of these novelizations planned to work together with the model making in model magazines that were read in the same period, I am now astonished that I am on the side that's telling the stories. This time's "Macross the Ride", even though air races are used as the setting, an ethnic-identity (racial self) theme is also a part of the basis of the story. While layering on the generations, Earthlings and Zentrādi cooperate together in a voyage in the vast universe in a large-scale city fleet ... In order to depict that, I considered the extreme air race "Vanquish" which used Valkyries. Even though air races that use Valkyries is a setting that also received support from Supervisor Kawamori, there is also pressure just from his support (laugh). Of course, "song", which cannot be removed from Macross, has also been incorporated. Well, similarly to a space emigrant fleet, even though this may be a lengthy journey from here, receiving your fellowship in this serialization would be greatly appreciated.

Ukyō Kodachi Born in 1979. In 2004, he had his debut as a pro-writer taking advantage of a semi-selection of his work, "Spirit World Strategy Chaos Flare", in 5th Game Field grand prize TRPG category. Thereafter, he has been in the midst of writing for various magazines and publications. He's also in charge of writing the novelization of "Macross F" (Kadokawa Sneaker Pocket Editions), and he also has abundant confidence in his writing from Director Kawamori.

The full-length "Macross The Ride" novel will appear on the Dengeki Hobby Website!

CHARACTERS
Character Designer: Katsumi Enami

"I... I'm Meltrandi, so why can't I kill people!?"

Chelsea Scarlett

A pilot of the private special (duty) military agency S.M.S's Apollo Flight. Besides being a pure-bred Zentrādi, she is the owner of various career and is said to have formerly been an idol. As she has an artist's spirit whose sensitivity is strong, she excels in sensing the mood of people around her. Even though she distinguished herself as a pilot with ability in aerial combat, because of the emotional shock, it became impossible for her to fight, so she converted from a pilot into a Valkyrie racer. While she displays Hakuna's uninhibited speech and conduct, she recognizes his skill.

"There ain't no man, woman, purebred, Zentrādi or half-breed* in the sky."

Hakuna Aoba

A Valkyrie racer who spurs on an old VF-1 in the Macross Frontier Fleet's Island 15. Even though there is the rumour that he was originally a New Unified Forces VF Special Forces elite, he is an enigma because of his uninhibited speech and conduct. With his flying skill, it's certain that he splendidly manages an old-type VF-1; and even though he is constantly within the championship sphere of the races, he is the "Uncrowned King", as he invariably suffers machine troubles in the finals. In meeting Chelsea, he has shown his ambition to win the championship in the races in the present term.

* translator's note: "mixed race" or "child of parents from different races" is closer to the original meaning. However, all are either too clunky or not colloquial enough.

"Macross" Glossary

From this edition, the serialization of "Macross the Ride" starts. As might be expected from this being a spin-out of "Macross F", the terminology of successive generations of Macross series also appears. The series productions that are relevant to the novelization as well as the terminology will be explained here.

Macross Frontier
TV series: 25 episodes total
Broadcast 2008.4–2008.9
General Director: Shōji Kawamori
Director: Yasuhito Kikuchi
Series Organization: Hiroyuki Yoshino
Character Design: Risa Ebata, Yūichi Takahashi
Mechanical Design: Shōji Kawamori, Junya Ishigaki

Captions:
Macross Quarter
The flagship of S.M.S. It is 1/4 (a quarter) the size of the existing Macross warships.

VF-25F Messiah
The variable fighter that becomes the New Unified Forces' next main fighter. It's early deployment was done by S.M.S.

The TV series that is the production that commemorates the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Macross series. The setting is the world 50 years after "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross". After the First Interstellar War, the human race drafted the space emigration project, and commenced the advancement to outer-space. In the midst of that, the 25th New Macross class Super Long Range Emigrant Fleet Macross Frontier encounters the Vajra, an enigmatic life-form, during it's sailing which is aimed at the core of the galaxy. The fleet is swallowed up in a conflict where life or death hangs in the balance.
One of the concepts of this production is a return to the origin of Macross, and a great number of homages to "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross" can be seen in it. Moreover, it follows the basic concept of the Macross series with a love triangle that includes two songstresses, Ranka Rii and Sheryl Nome, in addition to the protagonist, Saotome Aruto; and, of course there are variable fighters. The planned opening of the 2nd part of the theatrical edition, the concluding episode of the series, is next year.
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross
TV series: 36 episodes total
Broadcast 1982.10–1983.6
Chief Director: Ishiguro Noboru
Series Organization: Ken'ichi Matsuzaki
Character Design: Haruhiko Mikimoto
Mechanical Design: Kazutaka Miyatake, Shōji Kawamori

Captions:
SDF-1 Macross
A 1,200 m long Space Battleship that was constructed as a rebuilt alien interstellar space ship.

VF-1J Valkyrie
The Unified Forces' main Variable Fighter. It excels in general-purposefulness, and can transform into 3 forms.

The first work in the Macross series. It depicts the fight with the Zentrādi, the first aliens that the humanity encountered (the First Interstellar War). After the outbreak of war, the Earth Unified Forces' newly made warship SDF-1 drifts in space along with refugees. While sustaining the Zentrādi pursuit, the SDF-1 aims for the Earth. Playing a central role in the story is the Unified Forces' pilot Ichijō Hikaru, and Lynn Minmei, who was the pretty daughter who attracted boy's to her parents' Chinese restaurant that became an idol. The Zentrādi fear the "culture" that humanity possesses, and in the midst of that, Lynn Minmei's singing voice guided the First Interstellar War to it's conclusion.
It is the production that established the "transformation" of the series Variable Fighter VF series, the "song" of idols, and the "love triangle" of the protagonist and heroine, which are the common concepts of the Macross series. Afterwards, it is the subject of the movie version that Mr. Kawamori Shōji directed. It is the starting point that gave birth to a lot of sequels.

(Project)
Long Range Emigrant Fleet

Caption:
• The First Long Range Emigrant Fleet Megaroad 01. About 25,000 crew who were gathered by public appeals started on the journey to the Milky Way seeking a new heaven and earth.

After the First Interstellar War, the New Unified Government drafted the Mankind Seeding Project (Space Emigration Project, or Galaxy Seeding Project), which aimed at searching for and emigration to stars that the human race is able to reside on. Starting with 2012's First Long Range Emigrant Fleet Megaroad 01, fleets were dispatched to every quarter of the galaxy. The 25th New Macross class Super Long Range Emigrant Fleet Macross Frontier on it's own, has civilians on the scale of 10 million residing within it.
Even though the main leadership of the initial Long Range Emigrant Fleets was the government, gradually contributions from general enterprises increased; and afterwards Long Range Emigrant Fleets that were planned by large companies also appeared.
(Humanoid Race)
Zentrādi / Meltrandi

Caption:
• Even though their appearance closely resembles that of the human race, their stature is more than 5 times that of a human's. It is also possible for them to become an Earthling's size with a special device.

The first aliens that mankind encounters. The race is entirely combatants, and their raison d'être is nothing but combat. Consequently, until their encounter with Earth's human race, they didn't possess culture. At first, they had an excessive response to culture, and depending on the situation, they displayed fear. After the First Interstellar War, one part of the Zentrādi chose coexistence with the human race. They were micronized to the same size as humanity, and these Zentrādi also mated with humans on their own initiative.
The Meltran are the female type of Zentrādi. The movie that was released in the postwar period that depicts the First Interstellar War appears to have exhibited the naming of the female type of Zentrādi as Meltran (or Meltrandi). That name appears to have spread gradually.

(Operation)
Minmei Attack

Captions:
• The bridge became Minmei's stage during the operation when the Macross warship formed a special attack on the enemy camp.

Lynn Minmei
The legendary songstress that contributed to the First Interstellar War's victory. In the postwar period, she participated in the First Long Range Emigrant Fleet.

The operation that the Unified Forces used against the Zentrādi in the final phase of the First Interstellar War. Lynn Minmei's songs was broadcast to all the fleets of the enemy and allies, and the Unified Forces formed a special attack on the enemy stronghold while piercing the Zentrādi who have no resistance to culture. That pillar of the enemy was annihilated, and victory was won. At this time, there was also a Zentrādi fleet that formed a united front with the Unified Forces that also assisted in the coercive broadcasts to the enemy fleet. Due to this experience that gave birth to a miraculous victory from an overwhelmingly lower war-making potential, the tendency to use songs as one of the tactics used in combat with aliens was born.
(Culture)
Protoculture

Caption:
• The prehistoric civilization is depicted in the theatrical edition "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross; Do you Remember Love?". It is considered to have been bequeathed by the Protoculture.

The intelligent life that attained the first culture in the universe, as well as their civilization. Even though they boasted of the prosperity of an Interstellar Republic that they had built up once, afterwards it is considered to have been destroyed.
The Zentrādi are giant type living weapons that these Protoculture made. Planted in the Zentrādi at the genetic level is a strong fighting instinct, and after the downfall of the Protoculture, the Zentrādi continued to fight in the universe for eternity. On one hand, there's a theory that Earth's human race was also made by the Protoculture, and on the other hand, the explanation that Protoculture are the human race's ancestors is being chanted.

(Other)
Air Races

Caption:
Fan Racer

A small craft that was developed with the goal of being used in air races and acrobatic shows. As 6 rocket boosters were installed, it had a presumed highest speed of 1,028 Km/h.

Ichijō Hikaru

An acrobatic team originating Unified Forces pilot. He played an active role in the First Interstellar War.

(Organization)
S.M.S.

Caption:
• S.M.S. also participated in the anti-Vajra war. There's also a theory that the government had anticipated a Vajra encounter and had contracted S.M.S.

Jeffrey Wilder
By being S.M.S.'s commander, he's the Captain of the Macross Quarter. He's an ex-serviceman who also has piloting experience.

The so-called airplane races. The history of air races is old, and they have been held since the beginning of the 1900s, from only several years after the birth of powered aircraft. Races were also held before the First Interstellar War, and at that time, race-use airframes were also developed. The favourite fan race that First Interstellar War ace pilot Ichijō Hikaru boarded before enlisting in the Unified Forces is one of those airframes. Even though Ichijō Hikaru seems to have used the fan racer for acrobatic flight, he had excellent flying skills from the time of his enlistment, because he might have also had racing experience.

Strategic Military Service—A private military provider that's stationed in the Macross Frontier Fleet. Due to a contract with the Frontier government, S.M.S. primarily undertakes regular armed forces support missions such as per-reconnaissance of the Fleet's planned route, guarding important persons, and evaluation testing of new new weaponry. Its flagship is the Macross Quarter. In addition, S.M.S. is provided with such things as the state-of-the-art VF-25, and the quality of the members of S.M.S. is also high; it is a powerful military organization that surpasses the regular armed forces. S.M.S.'s parent organization is an interstellar transportation company.
(Mechanic)
Quadoran-Rō / Nūjaderu-Gā / Rigādo

Caption:
Quadoran-Rō
The powered suit for female soldiers. It is equipped with a great number of fixed armaments, and boasts of a manoeuvrability that surpasses that of the Nūjaderu-Gā.

Nūjaderu-Gā
A strong powered suit that's equipped with fighting strength, defensive capabilities and mobility. It is possible to operate the suit both inside and outside of the atmosphere.

Rigādo
A single-seater battle pod that has high augment-ability and has a simple structure that puts importance on produce-ability.

The Zentrādi mobile weapons can mainly be categorized as battle pod types and powered suit (battle suit) types. The Rigādo comes under the battle pod type, and the Nūjaderu-Gā and Quadoran-Rō come under the powered suit type. As there was no concept of armament development in the Zentrādi, these mobile weapons have been operated through 500,000 cycles. However, after the First Interstellar War, due to the coexistence with Earth's human kind, the evolution of Zentrādi series armaments begins. But, the Zentrādi who don't coexist with Earth's human kind seem to still be operating the same armaments.

One More Holy Sword that defends the Frontier Fleet

The "Macross the Ride" that started this month. Chelsea Scarlett is the heroine of the story. The craft that adorns the first episode is not a race craft, but, what the... a warplane. Nevertheless, it appears in the story as the favourite airplane of Chelsea Scarlett, before she became a racer. This time, let's introduce this variable fighter, centring on how it was produced from a style arrangement by Mr Hidetaka Tenjin to a three-dimensional object.

Caption:
• The VF-19EF that Mr. Hidetaka Tenjin drew. Even though originally it was one of the rough ideas that was drawn for the heroine's race craft, it was put to use by this 1st episode, and it was reborn as an S.M.S. specification.

VF-19EF Airframe Explanation
A VF-19E monkey model. As the Earth main region openly hesitated to export the VF-19E in response to fleets that planned to mass produce it, the Frontier Fleet improved upon the monkey model. Officially, it is a joint development of Frontier's Shinsei and L.A.I. For that reason, a limiter is put on some of the mechanisms as such things as the airframe control AI and sensor system are original developments of the Frontier Fleet. In accordance with S.M.S. doctrine, which stresses combat within the atmosphere, the VF-19EF is equipped with canards as well as VFC. The S.M.S. specification experimentally uses the prototype EX-Gear in the control system, and it succeeded in protecting the pilot from the absurd manoeuvrability of the VF-19.
A commander specification craft also exists that conforms to the main region's S type specification, which has an expansion of the command communications equipment as well as an extension to the laser machine-guns applied to it. The commander specification craft seems to have been informally named the EFs model.
Even though the standard equipment is a genuine Hughes GU-15, it's possible to equip the VF-19EF with the new model Hughes GU-17A that was developed for the VF-25 (Chelsea, who prefers close combat, has equipped her craft with a GU-17A). Improvements have been applied to some parts of the airframe in order to withstand the GU-17A's large recoil.
154 planes were produced, and they were mostly deployed to S.M.S. Some were deployed to the Frontier's New Unified Forces "Round Table", a Special Flying Corps, where the VF-19EF was active in passing itself off as an anti-terrorism special missions craft (this was mainly a publicity stunt).
The VF-19EF's data, which was accumulated by S.M.S, helped bring forth the appearance of the VF-25 as well as the VF-171EX.

2. The main wings which are scratch-built from plastic sheets. The thruster's detail is reproduced in the wing tip.
3. The VF-25 gun pod in the underside of the airframe. It unexpectedly suits the VF-19EF. Notice the sharp engraving of the panel lines.
4. The shield part and tail on the surface of the airframe are entirely newly made. The nozzles are identical to those in the show, and they move up and down.

Column: Until the Valkyrie Style Arrangement is Decided

Coverage and text: the editorial department

The race specification VFs (Variable Fighters) in "Macross the Ride" are what is most on this magazine's readers' minds. Mr. Hidetaka Tenjin, who is in charge of the style arrangement of the VFs in this project, while reading that intention and VF design due to director Kawamori Shōji, thought up the VF arrangement as a racer. There were many meetings between Mr. Hidetaka Tenjin, the editorial department and the author concerning the race theory, especially so that VFs whose performance greatly differs due to the era could compete in the same way. Accordingly, such things as the race course, competition speed limits, as well as the spectacle of the pilots playing to the audience were discussed. We decided on the rough trend of the race airframes, the zeal of the race and something similar to a decision on race regulations that were quite real. The full-blown Valkyrie air-race "Vanquish" begins from the next issue, and its been decided that the racer Valkyries that Mr. Hidetaka Tenjin arranged will appear one after another. We would like you to look forward to one more style that will draw out new fascination of the VF Valkyries, even though we don't know what appearance they will have.

Hidetaka Tenjin: A representative of Studio Tenjin Ltd. Even though illustration work is his main occupation, he's also active in acting work and as a designer. Starting with plastic model box art, he works on many productions, such as game packaging and DVD jackets. He was in charge of the mechanical art of Macross Zero and Macross F.
