VF-171EX Nightmare Plus EX |
BACKGROUND
Even though the VF-171 Nightmare Plus has both a balanced performance and excellent handling, it couldn't oppose the Vajra who are endowed with astounding abilities. The VF-171 EX improves upon the VF-171 in order to oppose the Vajra. This aircraft has acquired enough performance to fight evenly with the Vajra due to the installation of EX-Gear (Extender Gear), anti-Vajra equipment, the improvement of the avionics class, engine parts and so on. However, because it has been tuned to the airframe's design strength limit, it is a VF that is hard to handle, even with the adoption of EX-Gear.
This craft is produced by the Macross Frontier fleet, and brought military gains in the battle of the Vajra Homeworld, the final phase of the conflict.
The VF-171EX is a modification of the design performed by a collaboration of the Frontier Fleet's General Galaxy Arsenal and the L.A.I. Company, and production proceeded within the same fleet. The time of its operational deployment was observed to be about the time of the Macross Quarter's desertion incident. As the production number was limited, the preferred deployment was to the elite that were selected from the VF-171 pilots. This craft, which was put into the final stage of the Anti-Vajra War, took an active part in such things as the battle of the Vajra Homeworld.
The VF-171EX was the first New Unified Forces' VF to use the EX-Gear control system as standard equipment. Due to the improvement, accompanying the mitigation of the VF-171's difficult handling, there was an improvement in performance. Moreover, in the adoption of this system, there's data that the VF-171EX's training period was shortened by up to 30%.
Even though the base VF-171 had a lower output than the VF-17 originating craft, highly reliable engines (FF-2110A) were installed in it, and it had a specification that even general pilots were able to deal with. On the other hand, the VF-171EX has exchanged the engines for the VF-19's FF-2550F engines, and its manoeuvrability has improved. As a result, this craft has acquired a performance that exceeds that of such vehicles as the VF-17 and VF-171, and it's manoeuvrability in Fighter is also excellent. However, because the VF-171's basic design doesn't support an ISC (Inertia Store Converter), ISC wasn't installed in the VF-171EX, and its performance during high-manoeuvrability doesn't reach that of an ISC equipped craft. For that reason, the VF-171 was criticized by pilots who are acquainted with the VF-25 Messiah as a makeshift airframe.
Even though the VF-17 archetypal craft featured a unique specification where 2 kinds of GERWALK form were used for different purposes, there are many cases were the VF-171 used the common GERWALK where both arms are completely extended. The VF-171EX is also similar to the VF-171. Even though the basic specification is the same as the VF-171, the VF-171EX has implemented a comprehensive performance improvement by such things as strengthening the output and updating the avionics.
As its output has been greatly increased by equipping the VF-171EX with VF-19 class thermonuclear turbine engines, its hand-to-hand combat abilities in battroid form have become very great. The VF-171EX has acquired a close-range combat strength to be able to fight as an equal to the Vajra. Of course, it goes without saying that the VF-171EX has strengthened its G-resistance and improved its controllability due to EX-Gear, and that is the main reason for its high performance.
VF-171EX Squadron Leader Fighter (Command Specification): a planned variation [modification], that mounts the same Heavy Weapons Protector Equipment as the armoured VF-25. Armour parts are added to what becomes the shoulder area in Battroid, as well as leg boosters, and so on. It is a fuselage [fighter] that has heightened defensive power and mobility, and cuts into [attacks/raids] the enemy.
RVF-171EX Electronic Warfare Fighter (RVF Specification): a special-purpose, RVF specification fuselage [fighter] for searching for the enemy and electronic warfare. Based on the reconnaissance RVF-171 with strengthened firepower and electronic warfare equipment. A radome on the back and an undersurface stabilizer type antenna, have produced a form [shape] peculiar to the RVF specification; the same as the RVF-25. With missiles under the wings, and so on, the armaments are substantially more than those on the RVF-25.

NOTES:
- (1) destroying the head of the fighter will knock out the Valkyrie's major sensor systems, including all of the optics systems (infrared, nightvision, thermal). Radar and communications will be unaffected.
- (2) depleting the MDC of the main body will destroy the Valkyrie. The pilot and cockpit section/escape pod will be automatically ejected from the doomed Valkyrie before it explodes by the Valkyrie's main computer.
- (3) the Pinpoint Barrier shield regenerates at a rate of 50 MDC per round. Even if completely destroyed the shield will regenerate to full strength within 2 melee rounds. The shield is usually generated on the right or left arm of the VF-171EX.
- (4) optional attachments that offer extra protection. Whenever the fighter takes damage roll 1D6. On a result of 1-4 the Super Parts take damage before the VF's main body does. Alternatively, if the pilot makes a successful parry roll the Super Parts automatically take damage first.
Explosive: unless otherwise noted, a Super Part will explode violently when its MDC reaches 0. If the computer is functioning it will automatically eject the damaged part. If it is not, the pilot has one melee action to eject the Super Part before it explodes. Parts that explode do 1D6x100 MD. Deduct damage first from the part covered by the Super Part, and then any remaining damage from the main body of the VF.

DEFENSIVE SYSTEMS
Note: Refer to the VF-19 Excalibur for stats unless otherwise noted herein:
1a. ASS/PS 155 3RD GENERATION ACTIVE STEALTH SYSTEM
Built into the fuselage of the VF-171 is a stealth system that, when activated, renders the craft almost invisible to standard sensors such as radar. The VF-171EX Nightmare Plus EX has the 3rd generation of Active Stealth System, which is of the same grade as the VF-19's system; and has improved the stealthiness of the VF-17.
1b. ACTIVE STEALTH WING
In addition to the anti-radar coating, the main wings are mainly used as heat sinks after combat ends, to avoid infra-red ray detection during combat.
2. ESCAPE POD
3. EX-GEAR
The VF-171EX features a built-in EX-gear system and gunner kit in the cockpit. EX-Gear is an "interface that's worn", which enables highly accurate flight control due to the pilot's muscles' electrical current, and literally the VF-25 can be precisely controlled by the sensation of one's hands and feet. In addition, there are such things as a medical kit and simple cold sleep functions. The EX-Gear is also provided with a life preservation function for the pilot.
4. INTERNAL MULTIPURPOSE CHAFF/FLARE DISCHARGER SYSTEM
5. HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS
6. HOWARD PBS-03F PIN-POINT BARRIER SYSTEM
7. SELF-DESTRUCT
8. SWAG ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEM (SWAG/RA155EX)
The VF-171EX has had its Energy Conversion Armour system changed to the SWAG/RA155EX type, and has realized an approximately 20% improvement in armour strength compared to the VF-171. The VF-171EX uses excess power from the engines in Battroid and GERWALK to reinforce the armour strength of the VF-25. Effectively triples the armour's durability. Optional rule: reduce the MDC to one-third (33%) in fighter mode.
9. ANTI-OPTICAL WEAPON VAPORIZING ARMOUR
A function added to the passive stealth coating substance spread on the surface of the airframe is to vaporize instantaneously when exposed to high energy, thereby diffusing a beam weapon. Approximately 30% is dampened from the output of a beam machinegun grade weapon.
- DURATION: unlimited
- PROTECTION: reduces damage to (apply modifier after damage is rolled):
- Beam Machinegun/Gun pod: x0.7.
- Beam Grenade/Bazooka/Full Armour Shoulder Guns, etc: x0.85
- Anything Larger: ineffective.
10. ECCM
The VF-171EX has improved ECCM performance.
OFFENSIVE SYSTEMS
The VF-171EX acquired a fighting strength that could oppose the Vajra with the equipment that supports MDE shells. In addition to the fixed armaments, there is an anti-Vajra Combat Standard Armament Pack that equipped on the armament stations on various places of the airframe. Also, MDE bullet using arms are installed on the arm supplemental armament stations.
1. Ericon AAB-9A Beam Cannon: (2)

- RANGE: 5,000 m
- DAMAGE: 1D8 MD per round. 10 round burst, single target - 1D8X10 MD. 20 round burst, single target - 2D8X10 MD. For bursts greater than 25 rounds, increase the damage by a scale of 1D8X10 MD per 10 rounds (it is recommended to stick to multiples of 10 when firing for ease of damage resolution) OR refer to the modern weapons rules for machineguns. The cannons can be fire-linked so that firing both cannons at the same time counts as one attack (does double damage).
The machine gun can be used for sprays: 10 round spray - 1D8 MD per target, effects 1D4 targets. 20 round burst spray - 1D8 MD per target, effects 2D4 targets with a 50% chance of hitting bystanders. Longer duration sprays (up to limits of the magazine): 2D8 MD per target, effects 4D4 targets. Chance of hitting bystanders is 70%.
- RATE OF FIRE: equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks. The fixed machine gun isn't limited to bursts of 10, 25 or 300 rounds.
- PAYLOAD: 150 rounds per gun. The guns cannot be reloaded in the field.
3. Howard GU-14B Kai Gatling Gunpod:
A portable, large 7-barrelled firearm. It has a grip on the side for the left hand, and the trigger is pulled and (the weapon) discharged by the right hand. With retractable handle and fore grip, folding stock, muzzle sensors, and strap. It is mounted with an exit port and stealth cover in the lower main fuselage in all modes or ejectible from the lower leg section into manipulator in Battroid (one spare gun pod magazine stored in lower main fuselage in Fighter or in opposite lower leg section in Battroid). The gun pod is an updated version that supports MDE shells.
- RANGE: 3,350 m
- DAMAGE: 1D12 per round. 10 round burst, single target - 1D12X10 MD. 25 round burst, single target - 2D12X10 MD. Note, for bursts using greater then 25 rounds, increase the damage by a scale of 1D12X10 per 10 rounds OR refer to the modern weapons rules for machineguns.
The Gun Pod can be used for sprays: 10 round spray - 1D12 MD, affects 1d4 targets. 25 round burst spray - 1D12 MD, affects 2D4 targets with a 50% chance of hitting bystanders. Longer duration sprays (up to limits of the magazine): 2D12 MD, affects 4D4 targets. Chance of hitting bystanders is 70%.
- RATE OF FIRE: equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks. Note that the amounts fired by the gun pod aren' limited to only 10, 25 or 150 rounds. Any variation can be fired (it is recommended to stick to multiples of 10 for ease of damage resolution).
- PAYLOAD: 150 rounds. Additional ammo clips can be inserted, but exchanging clips requires the VF-171 to be in Battroid or GERWALK, and takes 2 actions to reload. One spare clip is stored in the left leg of the VF-171.
4. AVPAGC / MEDC30-EX-A Anti-Vajra MDE Particle Anti-Gravity Cannon / 30 mm MDE Machine Gun Matrix
Made by Shinsei Industry and L.A.I Co. Macross Frontier Arsenal. It is mounted on a special additional armament station on the vertical stabilizer in Fighter, and the forearm in GERWALK and Battroid. The Gun Matrix can be retained on the arm or operated held in the hand in Battroid. The Gun Matrix takes the place of the gun pod and it has demonstrated an excellent offensive ability as a main weapon. The Vajra are crushed by a special warhead in the MDE Vulcan that uses the fold ore extracted from the corpses of other Vajra.
If used within an atmosphere, the Gun Matrix completely disrupts the max speed (-50%) and hampers manueverability (-1 to dodge) when the VF is in Fighter.
30 mm MDE Machine Gun
- RANGE: 3,350 m
- DAMAGE: DAMAGE: 1D20 per round. 5 round burst, single target - 1D10X10 MD. 10 round burst, single target - 2D10X10 MD. Note, for bursts using greater then 10 rounds, increase the damage by a scale of 1D10X10 per 10 rounds OR refer to the modern weapons rules for machineguns.
The Gun Pod can be used for sprays: 10 round spray - 1D20 MD, affects 1D4 targets. 10 round burst spray - 1D20 MD, affects 2D4 targets with a 50% chance of hitting bystanders. Longer duration sprays (up to limits of the magazine): 2D20 MD, affects 4D4 targets. Chance of hitting bystanders is 70%.
- RATE OF FIRE: equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks. Note that the amounts fired by the gun pod aren't limited to only 5, 10 or 300 rounds. Any variation can be fired (it is recommended to stick to multiples of 10 for ease of damage resolution).
