Oberth class Space Destoyer |
BACKGROUND
Due to the ASS-1 taking up residence on Earth, mankind got to know about the dispute between alien comrades taking place outside of the solar system; and established the Unified Government in addition to strengthening the Earth's defence system. As part of that strengthening, a Space Destroyer, mounting thermonuclear reaction rocket engines (copied from the Macross's engine technology), was developed. It is an excellent warship because of its manoeuvrability and mass producibility, which is due to its simplified structure. Although the adapted Over Technology engine, reaction warhead armament, mobility and offensive strength are good, because of its lightweight armour, the Space Destroyer is vulnerable.
Construction started in April, 2003, at the L5 (Lagrange-5) Industrial Station. Two years later, in March, 2005, the first warship, Oberth, was commissioned. The No.2 ship "Goddard" (in June) and the No.3 ship "Tsiolkovsky" (in September), were commissioned in 2005. Henceforth, in preparation for hostilities with any aliens who should come, the Space Destroyer was mass produced, and a considerable number were deployed by the outbreak of Space War 1.
However, the first battle won by the Space Destroyer was not Space War 1 in 2009, which it was waiting for, but in September, 2005; when the "Tsiolkovsky" was hijacked by the Anti Unification Alliance and attacked the [Unified Government] fleet returning from Mars. The Space Destroyer's first gunfire was turned on Earth's Unified Forces itself. Thus, the Unified Forces dispatched the "Goddard" in regard to this situation. The "Tsiolkovsky" was sunk with reaction warheads, and the incident was suppressed. Incidentally, the captain of the "Goddard" at that time was (at the time) Colonel Bruno J. Global; who later became the captain of the Macross.
Although there was quite a number of space destroyers, most centering at Earth satellite orbit at the time of the outbreak of Space War I, they suffered heavy loss from the first contact with the Buritai fleet. However, it can be said that they succeeded in battle more than the Unified Forces Headquarters assumed, by their confirmed sinking of 10 or more enemy ships by reaction weapons.
At the time of the all-out attack by the Bodoru Main Fleet on the Earth, even though the remaining 125 Space Destroyer returned fire, they were all destroyed within 5 minutes by the enemy's overwhelming firepower. The result was that only the few ships assigned to the defence of the Apollo Base on the Moon's surface survived.
The original plan of the Unified Space Forces defence system had the goal of reconstructing the Macross and constructing ARMD I~VII (I and II docking to the Macross) by the year 2011, in addition to an impressive number of Space Destroyers at the Moon and Legrange points undertaking patrol duty. However, the fight with the Zentraadi broke out in 2009. The Space Forces rushed into a great war before the large fleet was completed, and the strategic concept of the space force was still fragile, so it collapsed. However, as the Bodoru Main Fleet boasted of a fleet exceeding 5 million ships with overwhelming war making abilities at the time of the all-out attack on Earth, doubt remains whether the Unified Space Forces Defense System would have worked effectively even if the combat abilities of the Unified Space Forces' plan was in order.

NOTES:
- (1) Depleting the MDC of the main body will put the ship out of commission. All internal systems will shut down, including life support and internal gravity. The ship itself will be an unsalvageable floating wreck.
- (2) Depleting the MDC of the main engines will force the ship to rely on its secondary engines. Depleting the MDC of the main engines AND secondary engines will leave the ship adrift in space. If in an atmosphere, the ship will crash (destruction of the main engines will render the anti-gravity system useless due to loss of power).
- (3) Destroying the command tower will instantly kill the command staff (main bridge).
- (4) Destroying the sensor array will deprive the ship of all forms of long range communications, radar and targeting. The range and targeting capabilities of the secondary systems are equal to that of a VF-11 Thunderbolt. The ship can still operate, but is at -3 on initiative, -3 to strike, and number of attacks per melee of the weapon systems are reduced by half.

2. MEDIUM-CALIBRE FIXED BEAM CANNONS (2):
The cannons can only fire at targets directly in front of the ship.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Warship
- RANGE: 300 km
- DAMAGE: 1D10x100 M.D. each, or 2D10x100 if fired simultaneously at the same target. Can be fire linked with the Large Calibre Beam Cannons.
- RATE OF FIRE: Each cannon can fire up to 5 times per melee.
- PAYLOAD: Unlimited.
3. RB-5 ANTI-WARSHIP REACTION WARHEAD MISSILE LAUNCHERS (3):
3 6-tube missile launchers on the rear ventral section of the ship. The anti-ship missiles use the RB-5 Reaction Warhead, whose explosive power is able to be set within the range of 20 and 100 kt. At maximum power, a single missile can incapacitate a Standard Battleship of the Zentraadi Forces.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Warship
- RANGE: 3,500 km
- SPEED: Under Investigation
- DAMAGE: 20 kt: 4D8x50 M.D. to 750 m, 4D8x5 M.D. to 1,500 m, 4D8x2 M.D. to 2,250 m, 1D6 M.D. to 3,000 m.
100 kt: 4D8x1,000 M.D. to 750 m, 4D8x100 M.D. to 1,500 m, 4D8x10 M.D. to 2,250 m, 4D8 M.D. to 3,000 m.
Other explosive yields between 20 and 100 kt are possible.
- BLAST RADIUS: 3,000 m.
- RATE OF FIRE: 1 to 6 per launcher. All three launchers can be fire linked. If necessary, all 18 missiles can be fired at the same time (counts as one attack).
- PAYLOAD: 18 missiles
4. SMALL ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS (12)
Mounted all over the hull, approximately 2 per side. The guns are essentially a GU-11 gun pod mounted on a turret with a larger magazine. With a rate of fire of 1,200 rounds per minute, the guns can expend their entire magazine within seconds. To prevent this, they have been mechanically preset to be able to fire in burst of either 5, 10, 20 rounds, or multiples of 10 until the magazine is emptied.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: anti-missile
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: anti-aircraft
- RANGE: 1,100 m
- DAMAGE: DAMAGE: 1D12 per round. 1D6X10 MD per 5 round burst. Refer to the Gun Pods and Beam Machine Gun Burst and Spray Rules for alternatives.
- RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks. The AA guns aren't limited to bursts of 5, 10 or 20 rounds.
- PAYLOAD: 1,200 rounds (200 along the barrel, and 1,000 in the replaceable magazine). Magazine requires 1D6 melee actions if spare magazine and appropriate equipment is standing by. Requires 1D6 melees if only a spare magazine is ready.
- NOTE: The AA guns can be set on automatic during combat, during which time they have a +1 to strike due to their tracking systems. The AA Guns' tracking system will target incoming missiles first and attacking mobile weapons second.
5. SHIP-BORNE CRAFT
The Oberth has a small bay at the bottom rear with a shuttle for ferrying supplies and passengers between ships. If necessary, this bay can hold up to 3 additional vehicles. If more than 2 vehicles are stored in the small bay, no additional equipment for the vehicles (such as reloads) can be stored.
The hangar ceiling is 15 m high. Only the hangars and cargo bays are macron (battroid) scale. The rest of the ship is micron scale.
Unified Space Forces Defence System Original Plan:
3 QF-3000 Ghost and SF-3A Lancer II.
|
Standard:
3 Variable Fighters with FAST packs. The VFs will have to land and take off in GERWALK and cannot convert into any other mode while inside the hangar.
|
6. HAND TO HAND COMBAT
If necessary, the pilot of the Oberth Space Destroyer can use the ship itself as a weapon. The attack isn't recommended as the sudden stop will send everything that isn't strapped down flying, and may cause considerable damage or even death among the crew.
DAMAGE:
- Ram: 1D4x1,000 M.D. (counts as two attacks)
