VF-11MAXL Kai Thunderbolt |
BACKGROUND
The custom version of the VF-11MAXL manufactured by Shinnakasu Heavy Industry and the Macross 7 Special Technologies Group. It is the craft that Mylene Jiinas boards in Sound Force. It was developed for the Anti-Protodevilun War, and is equipped with a sound system.
In addition, the VF-11MAXL is equipped with the VF-16's engines, and in addition to strengthening the airframe to tolerate the engines' increased thrust, it features a redesigned modified delta-wing that improves aerodynamic and air combat capabilities. The VF-11MAXL Kai is an improved upon VF-11MAXL used in Sound Force, and the cockpit control system has been replaced with a Sound-Stick Controller. It is also equipped with a Speaker Launcher Pod.
As the special reserve VF-11MAXL is made to order by it's pilot, there are less than 10 craft in the entire armed forces [it is unclear if this is only in the Macross 7 Fleet, or the entire Unified Forces fleet].

DEFENSIVE SYSTEMS
Note: Refer to the VF-11 Thunderbolt for stats unless otherwise noted herein:
1. 2nd GENERATION ACTIVE STEALTH SYSTEM
2. ESCAPE POD
3. INTERNAL MULTIPURPOSE CHAFF/FLARE DISCHARGER SYSTEM
4. HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS
5. SELF-DESTRUCT
6. SWAG ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEM
7. ANTI-PROJECTILE SHIELD
8. HOWARD PBS-03F PIN-POINT BARRIER SYSTEM
A fighter-sized Pin-point Barrier System. Even if destroyed by combined attacks, the shield will regenerate itself within 2 rounds. In order to use the shield, the pilot must make a successful parry roll to intercept an incoming attack.
THE SYSTEM IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN GERWALK AND BATTROID AND LIMITED TO THE LOWER ARMS AND FISTS.
- SIZE: the barrier can be up to 3 m in diameter
- DURATION: unlimited as long as the engines are active
OPTIONAL RULE: chance of overloading if hit with too much damage at one time
OFFENSIVE SYSTEMS
1. HIGH-PERFORMANCE AUDIO SYSTEM: (1)
Is installed in the airframe in the nose in Fighter and GERWALK, and chest in Battroid. It is used in conjunction with the Light Projector System, Speaker System and Sound Energy Conversion seat. During the Varohta War, the VF-11MAXL Kai was primarily used in attempts to get the Varohta to stop fighting. The system proved capable of distracting and, especially with the Light Projector System, temporarily dazzling the enemy.
High-Performance Speaker System
Built into the chest of the VF-11MAXL Kai. They emit up to 250 decibels of sound. They are normally used to project music during combat, but can be set to play any recording the pilot has loaded into the craft's computer, or whatever music the pilot produces while piloting the craft.
- RANGE: 450 m in atmosphere. Touch in the void of space.
- DAMAGE: temporary deafness
- SPECIAL: the loud music is very distracting; pilots forced to listen to it in combat suffer -2 to initiative and combat rolls. In addition, the music may cause a spiritia reaction in the minds of brainwashed Varohta pilots.
- RATE OF FIRE: active as long as the pilot is playing or producing music.
- PAYLOAD: effectively unlimited
Sound Energy System
A system built into the VF-11MAXL Kai that amplifies one's spiritia for attack and defence uses. The VF-11MAXL Kai was one of the first VFs to have the system installed. System contains a sound energy converter and a sound aura amplification system.
- RANGE: variable
- DAMAGE: see the Spiritia RPG rules
- RATE OF FIRE: equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks
- PAYLOAD: effectively unlimited
Light Projector System
Built into the chest of the VF-11MAXL Kai, next to the Speaker System. They emit a bright light projection, that can be used for rock shows, signaling, and blinding attacks. They are capable of projecting whatever image the pilot wants, if it is in the vehicles computer. They are not powerful enough to "cloak" the VF-11MAXL Kai to hide it from view.
- RANGE: 1,200 m
- DAMAGE: temporary blindness: on a successful strike, the opponent rolls to save vs blindness. If they fail, they are blinded for 1 round, and are -3 on initiative and combat rolls while blinded.
- RATE OF FIRE: equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks. Single shots only to attempt to blind an opponent (requires a weapons system check.)
- PAYLOAD: effectively unlimited
2. SPEAKER LAUNCHER GUN POD: (1)
The main musical warfare weapon of the VF-11MAXL Kai. The gun pod is mounted on a special hardpoint below the AVF in Fighter, and is hand-held in GERWALK and Battroid. The launcher pod has a sensor, foregrip, and stock magazine. The gun pod is used to fire Speaker Pods into opponent's vehicles in order to broadcast the VF-11MAXL Kai's pilot's music. After penetrating the target's armor, the Speaker Pods are fixed with a stopper and filler.
The shells are armor piercing and can usually penetrate even the toughest armor. In addition to their use as a distraction, the speaker pods have been known to occasionally free Varōta pilots from their brainwashing, permitting them to defect back to the Unified Forces.
Two (2) spare clips for the gun pod are mounted on the back of the VF-11's bulletproof shield; replacing a clip takes one action and can only be done in GERWALK or Battroid.
NOTE: this not a Sound Energy System (SES), this is just a normal speaker unit.
- RANGE: 1,800 m
- DAMAGE: a speaker pod does 1D10 MD on impact from armor penetration. The Gun Pod can be used for sprays. Refer to the Gun Pods and Beam Machine Gun Burst and Spray Rules for alternatives.
- SPECIAL EFFECTS: the loud music played by the Speaker Pods is very distracting—pilots forced to listen to it in combat suffer -2 to initiative and -1 to strike and dodge. In addition, the music may cause a Spiritia reaction in the minds of brainwashed Varōta pilots. The only way to remove a speaker pod is to physically cut it out of the vehicle back at base.
- ACTIVATION COST (amount of Spiritia required to activate the unit): none, as this is merely a speaker and does not require Spiritia to activate.
- RATE OF FIRE: equal to the pilot's combined number of attacks. The gun pod isn't limited to bursts of 10, or 20 rounds. Any variation can be fired (it is recommended to stick to multiples of 10 for ease of damage resolution).
- PAYLOAD: 20 rounds. Additional ammo clips can be inserted, but exchanging clips requires the VF-17 to be in Battroid or GERWALK, and takes 2 actions to reload. Two (2) spares clip are stored behind the shield.
3. SEMI-FIXED MAULER REB-23 LASER GUNS: (2)
Two laser guns are mounted on the VF-11MAXL Kai. They are fixed forward in Fighter and GERWALK. They are semi-fixed in battroid mode; the beams can be aimed about 45° in any direction along the front arc of the Valkyrie as they exit from the the hip-mounted wing units. Fires a free-electron laser with a maximum output of 1.5 MW at 6+ G loads.
Author's note: it is unclear where they are located and what size they are. The REB-23 are a best guess, and the laser guns could be head lasers, or something else entirely.
- RANGE: 50,000 m
- DAMAGE: 1D6x10+10 MD
- RATE OF FIRE: Single shots only. The laser guns can be fire-linked (does double damage).
- PAYLOAD: effectively unlimited
4. LITTLE ROCK MISSILE LAUNCH SYSTEMS (6)
Each engine nacelle and each dorsal/shoulder manuevering thruster assembly contains a Little Rock Missile Launch system. The launch systems can be used in all modes.
- MISSILE TYPE: Little Rock High Manueverabilitty Missile (Short Range)
- RANGE: 5 km
- DAMAGE: 1D6x10 M.D. per missile
- BLAST RADIUS: 3 m
- RATE OF FIRE: dorsal launchers are 1 or 2 missiles at a time; nacelle launchers are 1 to 6 at a time. The missile launchers can be fire linked for volleys of 2 to 20 (all) missiles.
- BONUSES: +6 strike, +5 dodge, 3 attacks until the missile is out of fuel (in most cases, the missile will use one attack to get to the target.
- PAYLOAD: 2 per dorsal launcher, and 6 per nacelle launcher for a total of 20 missiles
5. Wing Hard Points (4)
The VF-11MAXL Kai has 2 hardpoints per wing, for a total of 4. Some standard hardpoint loads are as follows. For alternatives, refer to the Hardpoint and Missile Details.
Note 1: Sound Force units do not mount ordinance on the hardpoints.
Note 2: the hard point missiles are usually fired within the first few passes of an attack; which is the standard Unified Forces tactic.
Speaker Pod Gamma: an option sound warfare weapon of the VF-19E Kai. The gun pod is usually carried into battle under the VF-17T Kai, mounted in two parts on the wing hardpoints. While the VF-11MAXL Kai wasn't depicted carrying the Speaker Pod Gamma in the Macross 7 TV series, it is equally capable of carrying and using the ordinance.
The Speaker Pod Gamma Launcher must be hand loaded in the field immediately before use (requires 2 actions by both the VF-19E Kai and VF-17T Kai). The Speaker Pod Gamma is designed to penetrate enemy capital ships in order to broadcast the VF-19E Kai's pilot's music. After penetrating the target's armor, the Speaker Pod is fixed with a stopper and filler.
The Speaker Pod Unit designed by Dr. Chiba before Spiritia technology was introduced. It was designed for anti-warship effectiveness. The only way to get rid of the Speaker Pod is to physically remove it.
NOTE: this not a Sound Energy System (SES), this is just a normal speaker unit.
MDC VALUE
Speaker Launcher: 250
Speaker Pod: 150
- RANGE: 3,000 m
- DAMAGE: does 1D10x100 M.D. on impact from armor penetration. Once embedded in a target's armor, the pod will extract anchors that adhere it to the ship's hull. The only way to remove it is to physically cut it out of the ship back at base.
- SPECIAL EFFECTS: the loud music played by the Speaker Pod is very distracting; crew forced to listen to it in combat suffer a -3 to initiative and a -2 to strike.
- RATE OF FIRE: 1 per round.
- PAYLOAD: 1 Speaker Pod Gamma with no reload. Additional Speaker Pod Gamma can be carried by other craft, but loading still requires 2 actions by both the VF-19E Kai and the carrying craft.
