Sector Description
250 light years from New Patagonia (a 3 week Space Fold). There is a large population, with many settled worlds, because a number of star systems near the main colony are rich with Fold Carbon (a high-demand material used in Fold Drives). Some of the planets are less than ideal places to live.
The region of space has a lot of stellar objects and phenomena. Habitable planets are a rarity, but there are plenty of white dwarf and red giant stars, with plenty more planets orbiting them—with the odd habitable moon orbiting a Jupiter-like planet. There are also a few smallish nebulae, and a couple dozen free-floating planets (most are like Jupiter, but light-years from the nearest star), and even a micro-black hole or two lurking in the background (the kind that is small and weak enough that they are not so much black, but greyish from the Hawking radiation and light that's just barely escaping from it).
Economy
Lots of small mining claims and colonies trade Fold Quartz and food stuffs with the main colony, Caesar, for manufactured goods. They don't like the arrangement, and some of the larger colonies are actively trying to develop their own manufacturing body. Caesar trades with Earth and the areas near Earth for high technology, which it in turn uses to trade with its dependencies in the sector.
By March 2066, the sector's secondary colonies have developed sizeable manufacturing capabilities, and have layed claim to some of the smaller colonies in the sector. However, they still rely on the main colony, Caesar, for high technology, and to maintain the peace.
Recent Events
The Battle For The Elephant Graveyard Planetoid exploded between Aertheold and Bo-yae in September, 2062. The New Unified Forces were unable to restrain either side, and get swallowed up in the conflict. During the battle, the Elephant Graveyard Planetoid exploded, and caused a net of expanding Fold Faults to spread throughout the sector. They reach their peak intensity in September, 2063.
By March 2066, the net of Fold Faults has steadily dissipated to a level below that of the ambient Fold Faults prior to the destruction of the planetoid. It leads to speculation that there is another planetoid laced with Fold Quartz in the Fold Anomaly, that was acting in resonance with the Elephant Graveyard Planetoid; causing the high levels of ambient Fold Faults in Sector M45-3. The major colonies in Sector M45-3 begin earnestly searching for a Fold Quartz laced object in the Fold Anomaly; which is now strikingly less massive and disruptive to transport routes in the area. As a result, the tensions between the major colonies in the sector are increasing again.

Starburst Nebula
383.33 ly from Earth. 35 ly in diameter. Rotation: 1.7° per ly, 18.5° angle with galaxy spin.
Mass Composition: 67% dark mater/empty space, 15% heavy gases/gas giants, 9% core star cluster, 8% proto-stars, 1% proto-black holes.
Nature: swift expansion of lighter gases; core stars in stable; proto-stars collapsing toward core.
Image of the Starburst Nebula by: alanlisleca.
The nebula is a major factor in Sector M45-03's space-fold bottle neck. The Starburst Nebula accounts for a 50 ly sphere of space, full of Fold Faults; in addition to several slivers of Fold Faults extending upwards of 100 ly long, and 20 ly in diameter at their thickest point. One of these slivers effectively separates the sector's primary human colonies from the neighbouring sectors of space. This nebula makes for impressive viewing even with the naked eye in the night sky throughout Sector M45-03 and the surrounding sectors.
History:
Several core stars were clustered around a brown dwarf star and a red dwarf star. The brown star should not have gone supernova when it collapsed, however, due to the shared-mass location of the dwarf red star and its drifting corona, enough mass was gathered for an extremely low powered supernova. The explosion was strong enough to destroy the red dwarf, and several other small stars and proto-stars in the region, blasting their combined mass out into the resulting nebula. However, it was not strong enough to destroy the core mass of the nearby stars. The result is a cluster of grandfather stars, surrounded by proto-stars in the nebula, all clustered around the core of an infant black hole. It seems likely that given time, the mass at the center of the nebula may form a black hole; however its evolution may take some 10 million years. Current speculation puts the creation of the nebula at a mere 180,000 years ago; making it one of the youngest star life-cycle events within human reach to date.

Image of the "Fold Anomaly" Nebula by: alanlisleca on 2011-11-07.
A series of layers of thin purple and blue clouds form the "Fold Anomaly" Nebula. Whatever is causing the Fold Dislocations is also organizing the gas into layers separated by open space. The center is obscured from view. The nebula is more cylindrical in shape than circular. It's speculated that there are two or more objects causing the electromagnetic field inside the nebula and the Fold Faults littered both inside and outside of the nebula. Some have speculated that they are black holes. Others have speculated that they are major Vajra Elephant Graveyards—like the Elephant Graveyard Planetoid that was discovered at the very edge of the core of the "Fold Anomaly" Nebula—and may have formed the Fold Carbon and Fold Quartz deposits found sparingly throughout the sector.
The nebula is an unexplored area of space due to the dozens upon dozens of Fold Faults contained within and emanating from the nebula.
